Last Week, The Chive published a story about a young lady named Lizzy Frisinger on a class trip who accidently sent a text message to her father after losing her virginity. The story exploded onto the blogosphere. The Inquisitr, Buzzfeed, and Huffington Post were just a few named sites that picked up the story. But it didn’t stop there.
Yesterday, ABC’s The View devoted an entire segment to the story. And this morning, the Today Show followed suit; both national outlets reporting the incident as TRUE.
BREAKING: And just minutes ago on the East Coast, Jay Leno reported the story on The Tonight Show.
What they didn’t know was that the whole thing was a hoax conjured up by the same people who brought you the now-famous ‘Trump-Tip Hoax‘ -us.
Amazingly, while these national shows were busy not checking their facts, The Chive was filming a story about how we pulled it off with Inside Edition to air early next week. Here is the (very simple) version of how we did it:
Step One: Find Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ Frisinger
~ Roll mouse over photo, OR ELSE! ~

Step 2: Find a Camera
~ Roll mouse over photo, OR ELSE! ~

Step 3: Find a Phone
~ Roll mouse over photo, OR ELSE! ~

And there you have it. A viral meme in three easy steps. You don’t have to worry about us pulling this again. The Chive is a photo blog, not a news source.
The Chive will make you happy.
The Chive is for people with heart conditions.
The Chive may cause you to become pregnant.

[...] UPDATE: Somebody sent The Chive a photo of Elizabeth here. UPDATE #2: GOTCHA! IT WAS A HOAX! READ ALL ABOUT HOW WE DID IT HERE! [...]
This was NOT a hoax. I know Lizzie, and this really happened!
It even got on Jay Leno last night…..too funny.
I guess this demonstrates how easy it is to pull off a hoax……but more importantly it demonstrates how poorly the media covers a story, uses journalism correctly, or just follows blindly what they are shuffled (rustling paper sounds) by others.
A great big game of telephone and it just keeps getting juicier and less factual as time progresses.
Great Job at such a demonstration, people.
Dagnabbit, this was so darned funny until I found this out. I even told a bunch of people ALL about it. Now I needa tell them it isn’t true
It also show’s how gullible and “lemming”ish people are. We can blame the news for not checking facts, but what about society that didnt even question it? Seriously.. after the embarassment of this happening.. who would go and take pics of the phone… and have them posted…
i know people that cry photoshop for any cool pics are torn apart… but people need to at least question what they see and hear before getting hyped about it.
lol on that note who’s to say it even is a hoax either, or a hoax by chive. Perhaps its a double hoax to see if people will switch their opinions quickly.
to me its just a funny story.
This is brilliant.
i don’t see the big deal about the whole thing, even if it is a hoax. some chick gets her cherry popped and accidentally tells dad. big deal. it was gonna happen sooner or later…
What does the beach have to do with losing your virginity?
This is stupid. It’s so simple to pull off this “hoax,” what’s the big deal? Not to mention I’m sure nowadays plenty of Dads have gotten inadvertent and extremely embarassing texts from daughters. I bet The Chive was never gonna reveal it was a hoax, but then once it blew up in the media they had to. All kinda shady to me…
