1964

The 24th Amendment to the Constitution, barring poll taxes, was ratified. Poll taxes had been enacted in eleven Southern states after Reconstruction as a measure to prevent African Americans from voting, and had been held to be unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court.

1968

North Korea seized the U.S. Navy ship Pueblo.

1973

President Nixon announced that an accord had been reached to end the Vietnam War.

1989

Salvador Dali died in Spain at age 84.

2002

Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by the National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty. In July 2002, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British national of Pakistani origin, was sentenced to death by hanging for Pearl’s abduction and murder.

2004

Bob Keeshan, “Captain Kangaroo,” died at age 76.
