During a free dive competition, without any breathing equipment, Yang Yun’s legs cramped up and she she sank to the bottom of a 20 foot arctic pool, unable to swim to the top. Yun said,

“I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface.”

The Beluga whale Mila sensed Yun’s difficulties and gently guided Yun safely to the surface. Wow.

Intelligent Belugas were among the first whales to interact with man and have facial muscles that allow them to smile.

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.

    [Everybody sing!]
    Baby beluga, baby beluga,
Is the water warm? Is your mama home,
    With you so happy?

I think that’s an amazing story, but why was the photographer just sitting there taking photos when he might have been able to help in the beginning?

  • rudeboi

now if we can just save them from us

  • Digitsis

Interesting story. If whales and dolphins can behave in a benevolent manner that means they can also behave in a malevolent way. It could just as easily pulled her under. Why were they holding this competition in a whale tank?

SreyaNotfilc, wet suits aside, divers working for national geographic as well as other research companies use whats called dry suits to dive in arctic waters for as long as breathing equipment allows. so, a camera man in a tank like that, which it looks like thats what hes wearing, is believable that he could stay down there a while.

This wasn’t real — think about it. They wouldn’t hold a diving competition in a tank where beluga whales are. There wouldn’t be divers ready to photograph the event. There WOULD be lifeguards to supervise any diving events.

This is staged, or a B.S. story put to different pictures. Not any different than the mega FWD: emails of baloney touching stories that you get forwarded from your aunt three times a week.

Free diving in a 20 foot pool? Was it amateur hour? This story is BS
