Xiamen Airlines began auditions for would-be flight attendants on Nov. 28. Thousands of young ladies from the Jiangxi Province flocked to auditions lured by a job posting titled, “Every girl has a dream to become a flight attendant.” The audition process includes a rigorous physicals and beauty lineups for both guys and gals.
The attitudes toward becoming a flight attendant in China is mired in the 1960′s where being an airline stewardesses is still the aspiration of so many pretty women and the apple of desire for every man. Successful applicants must be of certain height, weight, age, and beauty. The Xiamen Air flight attendant slogan roughly translates in English to “Shape first. Body forward.” Xiamen Air will hire 300 hopefuls this year.

Strange that people still consider it to *cool* to be a flight attendant. It isnt more to it than being a waiter and that not cool.

Yes there is. Flight attendants have hours and hours of diferent types of training. Their main purpose is not to serve food and drinks to passengers but to ensure their safety in cases of emergency. customer service is just an extra
Ok. So they are part waiter and part security officer and part duty free sales assistent. Still not cool.
Sure they have training: How to fit a small suicase into a overhead compartment. How to check that safety belts have been secured, how to open a can without spilling.
I can never agree on that their “main” job is to ensure their safety in cases of emergency. Just look at the time spend: 90% used on waiting, 8% used on sales and 2% on safety. That is the normal workload. Not the other way around.

The fact of the matter is that Flight Attendants spend the majority of their time studying fire-fighting, evacuations, first aid, hijack, disruptive passengers and any other emergency situations. These things have a very low chance of happening but the flight attendant needs to be very efficient and knowledgeable in these areas so that IF something happens they’ll know exactly what to do and will in fact save peoples lives. The food, drinks and customer service aspect are what people see all the time so they don’t realise how much more there is to it
IF the Flight Attendants spend the majority of their time studying fire-fighting, evacuations, first aid, hijack, disruptive passengers and any other emergency situations they should not need to look like a pageants contestants or like the misses on the pictures above. High heels are also not to prefer if you need to stop a disruptive passenger.
If your so called “emergency situations” where that important, I as a customer and a fellow passenger should not care about how they appear. Wouldn’t it be better to have stronger and more agile people that actually could protect us if something happened.
I bet Secret Service type of guy would do a better job protecting us than a normal flight attendant.
So, we are back to scratch, waiting is still not cool just because it is done 10 thousand feet above the ground.

I have respect for people who are trained to give me my shut up juice and look after my safety a few thousand feet above the ground, not to mention their oh so fine asses…
