Rogue wave crashes into beach at Mavericks surf competition (22 Photos)

maverics lead Rogue wave crashes into beach at Mavericks surf competition (22 Photos)

The surf hadn’t been this high in years. 50-60 foot waves sent surfers hurling down the 5 story face of the massive Maverick waves. Judges and photographers looked on nervously as the swells threatened the spectators. Then a rogue wave smashed on to shore, injuring a dozen spectators and toppling the tower. Luckily only two people needed to be hospitalized.
Many of these amazing photos were taken my my friend Dave Austin. Tons more amazing photos on his Flickr page.

  3. upper low says:

    I’ll bet it was freezing

    • sock puppet says:

The Pacific is always freezing in most places along the West Coast and a wet suit is part of a surfer’s gear there. Mavericks is north of San Francisco. I forgot who it was but the saying is “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”.

The guys who ride at Mavericks are a different breed of cat. Every year at this time, the swells become some of the biggest in the world and you’d better not be a newbie out there. These waves can kill you.

Believe it was Jack London who said “the coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco”…..
and a good way to regulate the cold is to pee in ur wetsuit! :-)

    • Ken says:

It wasn’t Jack London or Walt Whitman, it was Mark Twain. Google it.

Roghe Waves from Wikipedia: In oceanography, they are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record. Therefore rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves found at sea; they are, rather, surprisingly large waves for a given sea state.

#10 was badass until it turned into #11.

  13. pookie says:

Those are some mondo waves for sure, but true rogue waves are at least 4-5 times that tall, and no one would have survived

  14. P-90 says:

Is this ironic, I can’t tell.

  15. patton303 says:

I wish I had the nuts to surf there.
But I do have brains. Which is good too.
