The surf hadn’t been this high in years. 50-60 foot waves sent surfers hurling down the 5 story face of the massive Maverick waves. Judges and photographers looked on nervously as the swells threatened the spectators. Then a rogue wave smashed on to shore, injuring a dozen spectators and toppling the tower. Luckily only two people needed to be hospitalized.

The Pacific is always freezing in most places along the West Coast and a wet suit is part of a surfer’s gear there. Mavericks is north of San Francisco. I forgot who it was but the saying is “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”.
The guys who ride at Mavericks are a different breed of cat. Every year at this time, the swells become some of the biggest in the world and you’d better not be a newbie out there. These waves can kill you.
Walt Whitman said that about San Francisco…and every other city he visited. I quoted him for years on this before i realized it was him just being snarky.

Therefore rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves found at sea; they are, rather, surprisingly large waves for a given sea state.
#10 was badass until it turned into #11.
Those are some mondo waves for sure, but true rogue waves are at least 4-5 times that tall, and no one would have survived
