‘Monster Engine’ brings children’s drawings to life (12 Photos)

monster engine lead Monster Engine brings childrens drawings to life (12 Photos)

Eleven years ago Dave Devries started the Monster Engine project with one single question: What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically? This month, Dave’s art is being celebrated at the INDYINK gallery where dozens of artists are putting their own takes on children’s sketches. Look for those photos next week. Many more photos here.

That is really cool! I would love to see some of my old work done like that lol

  • janas

one of the coolest things i’ve seen on thechive

  • HellHathNoFury

    5- it’s the iron giant!
Is it just me, or is 3 quite obviously something that Dave didn’t catch?

    • jeff in Australia

      Agreed.. too late for Easter..

    • Paula

The Iron giant doesn't have four arms and a little girl. Dumb shit.

  • Mustafa_Beer

This is how Tim Burton gets his ideas?

  • Chris

I don’t like these. I mean, the idea is great, but I believe the authors of the paintings followed the lines of the children too closely, when they should have given priority to the idea.

    • HellHathNoFury

Right. The kids are not trying to make shapeless blobs, they’re making people and such, they’re just not good at it yet. I’m sure they’d look at the paintings and think, ‘what the heck is that guy trying to draw?’

      • Atomic Kangaroo

I agree, it’s like he has monsterized a lot of the pictures that would of been in the kids minds a lot brighter cuter and friendlier.

  • IceBerg

    ^wrong^

  • IceBerg

The fact that the artists followed the original lines is what makes these so interesting. If the artists gave priority to the “idea,” then you’d just have regular paintings of superman n’ such.

    • HellHathNoFury

You’re defeating your argument, my dear Ice Burger. If that were the case, the kids’ art speaks for itself and this guy wouldn’t be interpreting it, now would he?

      • IceBerg

I was trying to figure out what your ^argument^ was, but then I got bored.

        • HellHathNoFury

Couldn’t think of a decent retort? If you were ‘bored’, you wouldn’t have replied. Nice attempt at an insult, though. Keep working on those.

It works because it’s a professional version of a child’s drawings. As if the child had the ability to use a certain medium (ie. oils) and knew about shading, but still had the child-like spatial relations etc. #8 is supposed a picture of Wonder Woman…if the artist stayed true to the idea rather than the child’s product, the end result would be a fucking picture of Wonder Woman. Whoopee.

            • Anonymous 2

Ehh, obviously everyone already gets the idea.

              It works. Stfu.

          • ...

Hell… Are you seriously this retarded?

      • Para-sight

Yeah, I couldn’t figure out Hell’s argument either. I’m on the side that following the original lines is what makes these great.

      • doom

        youre stupid. these are awesome

        • Atomic Kangaroo

I don’tthink it’sthe following the lines that is the real problem, but that the shading and colouring probably do not match what the children had imagined. Like the Big mouth one at the top, and the #1 Kitty looking thing, yes he followed the line art,but they are not what I would have imagined the kids saw, “Big Mouth” looks a lot angrier and monstrous than the basic line original, just like the kitty one, the original one givesme the impression of something cuter.I think he took a bit too much adult artistic license and would of been better keeping it in that context of “if a young kid could draw like an adult” I seriously think the results would of been different. As an ArtistI would of done them differently myself. No critique on the guys ability, just the direction he’s come from.

the kids don’t give a shit. they’re out throwing rocks at a barn

  • McBeastie

You’re all over thinking this one. These are just kinda cool….that’s all.

    • Dunmer Gunman

      Amen to that.

If you want regular pictures and paintings then the net is full of them, this is an innovative concept.

      I like

  • nelly02

    very good.

  • bulgakova

    the best

  • Equalizer

    I agree, pretty cool….

  • toilet paper

I think the concept and the drawings are awesome. They lend a creepy hand to children’s drawings. It’s like a mix of Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro characters.

  • youdummy

    Wonder Woman is hot.

  • formula

this is a great idea i think

  • bubble_rider86

    i like it…..
