You’re right, I should have simply left a four letter comment like Yodogg did. Yes, I’ll admit to seeing something as stupid as Dumb and Dumber. When the phrase “best job ever” was used, that scene came to mind, no biggie. Forgive me if some indie, highly-praised, movie didn’t stand out with something more sexual.

I have never seen a site where the guys leaving comments tried so hard and failed so badly to be funny as the Chive. Other sites have trolls and some authentically bad people, but for some reason this site really seems to attract people who desperately want to be funny but aren’t quite sure how. Unless this is a new, more subtle method of trolling?
OK Steve. Since all of us are failing so hard…give it your best shot. Come on, make us laugh. A sense of humor takes many forms. For some people, the three stooges crack them up while others think it’s idiotic. English comedy can be very dry to some people. A good portion of comedy fans think Dane Cook is the best comic out there while many, myself included, yawn at his material. For every comment that you read and think isn’t funny, there are others that busted out laughing, shot coffee out their nose, or merely smirked.
Sorry, just being honest. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but 90% of the comments seem to have the same trying-too-hard, maybe-if-I-go-over-the-top-it’ll-be-funny feel to them.
Big Bob, just look at the comment above my first comment – are you seriously going to tell me that there are multiple people out there “busted out laughing, shot coffee out their nose, or [even] merely smirked” at that? That’s just one example, I know, but it’s fairly representative of the type of comments I see on here day in and day out.
ok, ok, I get your point. A lot of the comments here don’t make me laugh either but I’m glad people at least try instead of remaining quiet. Every once in a while I’ll read a rather lame joke but for whatever reason, it will strike me funny at the time. I know a lot of the things I say fall flat too but hey, if I made someone else chuckle then I don’t regret it a bit.

HHNF: That’s a prime example. That remark sort of had the form of a “cutting remark” like the ones you’ve probably heard other people make, but it wasn’t actually clever. And it didn’t quite make sense, either, since we have to make the jump from a tired joke about teachers and assume that you’re suggesting that I was trying to “teach” people how to make humorous comments because I can’t do it myself.
