Actually she is neither pathetic nor retarded. While I don’t particularly care for her antics or music she has done a number of very intelligent things with her carrying-on:
1) In today’s here-today-unheard-of-tomorrow music industry, she has established a memorable presence and sound so that she stands out and is not forgotten or blending in
2) She has to pay less to market her work and less effort to generate interest than other artists – because so many clamour to see what she is going to come up with next
3) Since you never actually get to see ‘her’, she can go out in public and have a regular life and no-one will recognize her. She gets all the benefits of rich and famous while still being able to have a personal life.

… from marketing, career and life standpoints what she has accomplished is brilliant – and considering that she attempted a more ‘standard’ career without success; almost certainly intentional.

I’m actually shocked that people are so emotional about Lady Gaga. I thought she was just an entertainment piece that we let do her thing. She’s just a crazy person we keep around to see what weird shit she’ll do next be it in fashion, music or videos.

The only explanation for why she is so popular has got to be that the entire populace collectively chose to forget how much disco sucked…but we’ll get there again hopefully.
