Gertrude was bowling the last frame of the last game of a the tournament. It had been a long day of hard-nosed, back and forth, cut-throat bowling against her arch rival, Betsy Joe Snuffin. Betsy Joe and Gertrude have been rivals ever since the third grade when Betsy Joe stole Gertrude’s first love, Johnny Pitsentruber.

It all came down to this. One more strike and Gertrude would have a perfect game. She’d be the 1993 Cooper County Champ and she’d win back Johnny’s heart. In her mind, she was already Gertrude Pitsentruber.

As Gertrude lined up her shot, Betsy Joe fumed. She glanced over at Johnny, but Johnny’s eyes were glued to Gertrude’s pear-shaped figure. Betsy Joe knew all too well Johnny’s eye for the bus driver bottom. With this loss to Gertrude, Betsy Joe would lose it all, the crown, the fame, the glory, and worst of all, the loving embrace of her Johnny.

Gertrude took one step. The crowd held their breath. Betsy Joe felt ill. Second step, the crowd leaned forward, eyes widened. Betsy Joe snapped…
