Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. In White Sands National Monument, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field. Learn more HERE.

They use that area for a dessert environment in quite a few movies. Transformers 1 and 2 filmed there and passed it off as Egypt, and if you go back to watch the movies again you'll notice the sand is white. It's a beautiful place though, really just makes you stop and stare

I agree. I live 48 minutes away. "Midnight moon" shots are awesome. Great place to party back in the day before they started locking it up overnight and charging to get in.

I grew up in a little town called High Rolls, it's tucked away in the mountains (background / photo 9). We could see the whole basin from our living room windows….funny how much you miss home when you see it like this.

Much of this area is covered with lakes during the winter. It is super fun to sled there in the summer!
