The yacht 'Maiken' was traveling in the south Pacific when the crew came across a bizarre sight. It was sand in the water, sand floating ON TOP of the waves. At first, they couldn't locate the source of the eerie phenomenon. A half hour later they heard a blast. Over the next few hours they watched a volcano form an entire island form in the middle of the ocean. This is pretty cool...

Hmmm…I couldn't see why not. Of course, it wouldn't take long before there are rumors circulating that they are making nuclear weapons on this tiny island and that they are using it to train terrorists so naturally we'll have to go bomb it. But sure, they can go ahead and claim a tiny spot of sand in the middle of nowhere. Not sure what good it's going to do, though.
(Sorry, my negative attitude is showing.)

Depends on where it sits. If is with a certain distance of another country is thiers. ( I don't recall the distance something like 100-300 miles). If it is truly out in the middle of no where it is free game.

I think it's theoretically possible, however considering that it's spewing ash and lava and is kind of an active volcano, I'd steer clear of it.

That wasn't ash though, it was the steam from the magma hardening because of the ocean. Besides the explosion was deep underwater, they were just seeing the results on the surface, and judging from the pictures they were far enough away to be in no danger. All in all very cool and a good example of right place at the right time.

A similar thing happened on a farm in the 1940s in Mexico. A man watched his farm turn into a volcano within a day, and in the next year it took over the city.

Yup-guess it doesn't take all those millions of years of slow formation. Imagine-Hawai'i probably formed in about an hour! This is why it was not widely disseminated-the scientists had to hide it to come up with a logical reason, or to wait long enough to insist it happened in a long time period.

First, its probably volcanic ash or pumice on top of the ocean, not sand. Secondly, it would take years to form a whole frikken island, and you would still have to wait years for the volcano to stop erupting before plant life can take hold and grow on the island, die, form compost, allow bigger plants to grow, then insects to arrive, then animals.

Also this eruption occured a couple meters off of an existing island, and the whole area has been seismically active for ages.
