Lucky sailors watch formation of volcanic island in the midde of the ocean (16 Photos)

The yacht 'Maiken' was traveling in the south Pacific when the crew came across a bizarre sight. It was sand in the water, sand floating ON TOP of the waves. At first, they couldn't locate the source of the eerie phenomenon. A half hour later they heard a blast. Over the next few hours they watched a volcano form an entire island form in the middle of the ocean. This is pretty cool...

      I second that.

    This post FTW!

  • Kjell King

    Volcanology is fun!

  • Hollywood

If this new island is in international waters, could they claim possession of it?

    • clark griswold

Good question Hollywood, I was wondering the same thing. Anyone who isn't entirely full of shit know the answer?

      • Bob

Depends on where it sits. If is with a certain distance of another country is thiers. ( I don't recall the distance something like 100-300 miles). If it is truly out in the middle of no where it is free game.

        • garp

…you could jump on the island and yell 'FIRST'

          • DrJTrotter

You could, but then you've got to deal with all those "thumbs down", and that's no way to start an island.

    • Jon without the h

Hmmm…I couldn't see why not. Of course, it wouldn't take long before there are rumors circulating that they are making nuclear weapons on this tiny island and that they are using it to train terrorists so naturally we'll have to go bomb it. But sure, they can go ahead and claim a tiny spot of sand in the middle of nowhere. Not sure what good it's going to do, though.
(Sorry, my negative attitude is showing.)

      • Cheer up John

Thats not the attitude of a Chiver, lets have some glass half full here!

You could claim the Island soley to use the following pick up lines in bars. 'I am a king', 'I own my own island'!!

Think of all the action you would get.

    • everyone

I think it's theoretically possible, however considering that it's spewing ash and lava and is kind of an active volcano, I'd steer clear of it.

  • Mirror Man

Of course, now anything that seems cool or unusual I'm going to be thinking "hoax!" For example, who wouldn't try to haul ass out of the area if they saw a volcano spewing ash?

    • HellHath NoFury

This was all over the news a couple of years ago.

      • Simple Jack

Perhaps a different volcano a couple years ago? Nah, impossible.

        • HellHath NoFury

No, honey, it was It's okay, we can't all Google things or read the big werds articles.

          • coocoocuchoo

yeh HHNF is right, i remember this story and these photos from at least a year ago. doesnt make it any less amazing though.

    • Merc

That wasn't ash though, it was the steam from the magma hardening because of the ocean. Besides the explosion was deep underwater, they were just seeing the results on the surface, and judging from the pictures they were far enough away to be in no danger. All in all very cool and a good example of right place at the right time.

      • Mirror Man

Perhaps far away enough. But if you read about Mt. St. Helens some years ago and what happened to a good number of morons who assumed they were at a safe distance, I still wouldn't have taken a chance.

      • pugs

        lol, magma

    • vince

Wouldn't that be "Haul ASH" out of there?……o.0

    • Hot Carl

Yeah, next time make the crew a bunch of HOPA's with lower back problems.

      • In Tents

        LOL! That's a frickin' RIOT!

  • Kawz

Do they get to name it?

I'd name it Jeyjafjallajökull, in honor of that aweome Iceland volcano, Eyjafjallajökull. Rolls right off of the tongue.

    • Gandalf..

  • Ripley

I've got dibs on filming the first reality TV show on it! Might as well call dibs on the first beer commercial as well…

  • stafferty

Why do people with yachts get to do all the cool stuff?

    • Simple Jack

Because they're on a boat, motherfucker.

    • the dude

      cause they have yachts

  • Confused

    thats actually pretty cool

  • MikeChive

It's actually true. Check out snopes:

  • McBeastie

Yeah, but did they stick around long enough to see the creation of the smoke monster?

  • Nola

2006 though? Pretty sure we all missed the news on it.

  • HellHath NoFury

Take that, 'millions and bachillions of years' scientists!
A similar thing happened on a farm in the 1940s in Mexico. A man watched his farm turn into a volcano within a day, and in the next year it took over the city.

    • Kjell King

I think this is what you were referring to.

      • HellHath NoFury

Yay for Kjellupa, who knows how to read! +100 pts. You still owe me a bunny and a drink.

          • HellHath NoFury

Is that all you know how to say? Do you not comprehend anything at all?
Yes, b0b, some of us have friends in Real Life! How about that? We see each-other and hang out and do fun stuff! Or is that also confounding to you? *heart attack and die of Not-Surprise*

            • b0b

    • Kawz

Did they name it, Jeyjafjallajökull? In honor of that awesome volcano in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull?

      I hope so.

    • b0b

  • tag

That's pretty sweet. Would be interesting to sail across one of those things as it happens.

  • HellHath NoFury

If they hadn't had a camera, no one would have believed them. Best pub story ever.

      • HellHath NoFury

You are so dumb, fo reals.

This is all I have to say to you

          • HellHath NoFury

well if you squint hard enough the volcanoes peaks sort of look like bewbs. but otherwise there's a whole internet filled with porn you can look at.

  • Ukulelemike

Yup-guess it doesn't take all those millions of years of slow formation. Imagine-Hawai'i probably formed in about an hour! This is why it was not widely disseminated-the scientists had to hide it to come up with a logical reason, or to wait long enough to insist it happened in a long time period.

    • Stubb

What exactly are you insinuating here?

  • Dave

First, its probably volcanic ash or pumice on top of the ocean, not sand. Secondly, it would take years to form a whole frikken island, and you would still have to wait years for the volcano to stop erupting before plant life can take hold and grow on the island, die, form compost, allow bigger plants to grow, then insects to arrive, then animals.

Also this eruption occured a couple meters off of an existing island, and the whole area has been seismically active for ages.
