Badass underground lair in Sweden (26 Photos)

0 0

This is Pionen, an underground data center that belongs to Sweden's largest internet service provider, Bahnhof. Located 30 meters under solid granite bedrock, it was built in a former bomb shelter and can withstand a direct attack with a hydrogen bomb.
This underground data center has greenhouses, waterfalls, and simulated daylight. If the power goes out, the backup power is provided by two German submarine engines. This place looks like the secret HQ of a James Bond villain.

can we go there when the world ends???

    • gaz

      It's a Vaultec vault from Fallout 3-4

    • CPO_Mendez

No. That's where the world starts to end…

  • Claire

So..I know where I want to work now. :]

    • Roscoe

      Underground… thanks.

    • Chantelle Wollbaum

I was thinking the exact same thing, this place is A LOT more cooler than my office/server mainframe room.

      • Claire

Seriously. I imagine it has a certain smell and feel to it too. :]

    • Pawndo

Way to be original and use an adjective from the title jackass.

      • Jesse

Just saying what I thought. Shall I write a whole paragraph to sway you? Or should I just not feed the troll.

        • Pawndo

If your going to take time to post a comment you might as well think it up yourself rather repeat what you just read 30 seconds earlier.

          • Lisa_Martin

Pawndo, if you're going to criticize someone, you better make sure your shit doesn't stink.

And this place is damn cool. ;)

            • Pawndo

you can keep your nose in and aound my ass all day tho Lisa ;)

              • Lisa_Martin

It's folks like you that inspire one of my favorite sayings Pawn. Fighting on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded. (Any haters, my kid rides the short bus…so bite me…gotta laugh.) I'm going back to work. Adios. ;)

                • top dog

That is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time.

                • Jesse Waters

                  She won the internets.

            • Pawndo

had i mentioned my thoughts on the post?

              • Lisa_Martin

No, but you're digging on Jesse, when you aren't using the proper form of you're/your. So, I reiterate, if you're going to criticize someone, make sure you're not fucking up too.

                Chive on.

              • Jesse Waters

No. No one cares either. My offer is now revoked on writing you that paragraph.

          • colby

judging by the ratings of your comments, i have to say, that jesse wins :P

            • Pawndo

who wants to have to skim through comments like that? seriously? he mite as well reply "first" on everyones comments.

          • Jesse

Actually, it was more about 4/5 minutes earlier. I admired the breathtaking epicness of this facility in each picture. And there was no need to be angry that all I said was "Badass." I know you must not have too much to do other than troll a post on a blog site, but come awn.

I'm pretty sure I've played this level in Goldeneye 64.

  • fred

and also home to the wikileak servers. :) thats not a joke.

    • Ken

That is the first thing I thought of, that wikileak servers would be housed in a place like this.

  • Kyle

Ok, so I'm sure they're Wifi is great, but there is NO WAY they have cell phone service there.

  • stoney

that looks like a good grow-op.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to say that as far as I know, this was originally built in the early 50's as part of Sweden's nuclear program, it was the site of Sweden's first nuclear reactor and built just so that they could make fuel for nukes. That's why it was built so deep underground so that a meltdown would cause minimum damage if the whole thing blew. And the large engines in pictures #5 #18 and #25 are submarine engines hooked up to generators that will kick in and keep the facility running if the power is cut.

    • PeterGun

Sorry, but your wrong there. Sweden's first nuclear reactor was buried directly underneath the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

This data center is on Södermalm, and WAS built in a former bomb shelter. How do i know, well i work for the company that built this underground data center.

well then I guess I stand corrected.

Most of the time I am not motivated by money beyond paying my simple bills and buying a nice meal now and again. Then I see something like this and for about 5 minutes I steel my resolve to acquire richess so I can build something badass of my own design.

I operated the same way when I was 10. Cripe. That's probably not good.

  • Dave inTech Support

But where's the clearly labeled, easily accessible self-destruct button?

  • Tom

I just have to wonder… how much do they charge for service?

    • Per

      $40 a month for 100/100 Mbit/s with anon IP included ($5).

    • Per

      Wait that's just a campaign. $76 regularly.

  • Phil

And here's a few 360 images from inside too.

    • Gecko

      Awesome Find!

  • elbruces

None of that is as beautiful as Sweden's pimpin' anti-censorship Internet laws…

  • FullBlownStoned
