Yeah Chive, the phrase is "Whet your palette," "whet" as in "sharpen" or "prepare." Nobody wants a wet palette unless they're dealing with water-based media and want to keep everything loose so you can throw around a lot of color.

And it might even be "palate" as in the inside of your mouth as opposed to "palette" which is the thing the artist keeps paint on. Not sure.
