This post makes me feel like a boss, I am only a quarter native american but have learned most of their culture through my father and grandfather. Probably my most favorite post yet Chive!

I saw a poll where like over 90% of American Indians have absolutely NO problem with "Indians," "Redskins," "Braves," "Chiefs," and all of the other traditional American descriptors for our aboriginal peoples. It is almost solely the political representatives of the American Indians and leftist, postmodern academia which thrusts their twisted revisionist bulls*** on the rest of the country.

Hello from a Colville Native in WA!

True. I remember Grandpa (an Apache from S Dakota) actually "shaving' with a Spring. He would run it over his face and pull out the hair. Now tell me that isn't bad ass.

    • emma

some women do that now, with a 'spring sprong'; it's kind of like threading.

If only the people still had this fierce assurance and pride and independence. It grieves my heart no end to compare my visual memories with these images. Too much was yielded to the white invaders. What’s needful can be reclaimed and celebrated. We can walk again in the way of beauty.

They stole our land and spread disease amongst themselves that we innocently exposed them to.

Native Americans don't have as much body hair as Europeans. My grandfather was half Cherokee and he could barely grow any facial hair. His arms were also almost hairless. This is common to the race.

Did ur grandpa have hair in half of his face ?

I HAVE THE UT MOST RESPECT FOR NATIVE AMERICANS, THEY WERE MASSACRED ABOUT AS BADLY, IF NOT WORSE THAN THE JEWISH PEOPLE, AND YOU DO NOT HEAR ABOUT OPPRESSION AND ALL OF THAT CRAP, THEY JUST WORKED HARD AND MADE THE MOST OF WHAT WAS LEFT, THAT IS A GREAT POST CHIVE, THIS IS THE BEST SITE OUT THERE AND TO THE CANADIAN CREE NATIVE, THAT IS GREAT TO HEAR

Many times these photographs were staged, with the photographer supplying props, outfits and such. Not always. Many photographers were trying to capture what they were seeing, to show the rest of the world. Some were real photojournalists but some were just looking to make money by creating souvenirs to sell.
These are amazing photographs, especially the quality considering when they were taken, but it's interesting to wonder which are genuine and which are staged. Still, cool article. Though, wish they'd titled it Native or Native American. Indian isn't exactly PC and it's pretty damn outdated.
And to all those trying to be funny, most of the time you're coming off as ignorant. If that was your goal….carry on.
