I retract the previous statement. Good link here = http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/11734434
I'm not taking anything away from these guys but NASA doesn't spend millions to take pictures. Most NASA projects have over a dozen objectives to complete and pics are only one of them.
No NASA, we just didn't have a multitrillion dollar budget, so we THOUGHT instead…
i want one, like now
YEAH, RIGHT!
Yeah RIGHT!
I bet their imaginary girlfriends were impressed!
I'm calling Bullshit on this one.
You're good – they conned the world but you saw through them!

It's a good thing he has knee pads on his pants #1
Where's the burning up on "re-entry" shit???
It was still in the atmosphere, so the air resistance stopped it from reaching speeds which would later cause friction from more dense layers of atmosphere.
NASA sent Voyager 1 10 billion miles away from Earth, and I doubt they copied photos off the internet to prove it.
Balls in your court, R/C plane guys………..
To the Chive:
You should elaborate, I´d like to know roughly how they did it.
Chive on!!!
Similar project idea, but actually documented: http://n1vg.net/balloon/
#2 that's cute ^_^
It was the guys at The Register. Check out http://www.theregister.co.uk and search the site for PARIS (Paper Aeroplane Released Into Space).
as cool as this is, a few students from MIT do this alot and sell the photos on this site. http://space.1337arts.com/
plus, NASA does ALOT more than just send cameras into space
If we are celebrating making NASA appear to waste money, how about when they spent millions designing and building a pen that works in zero gravity, while the Russians used a pencil.
If I tie myself to a weather balloon, I'll fucking fly into space too. Big whoop.
These guys did at as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkHH68dvwjk
Woopti freaking dooooh! They used a weather balloon to take a picture. This was done in the early 50's, Way to recreate history and take popshot's at NASA.
Guys just so you know, the plane was made of paper! check out the register as thats the guys who did it. P.A.R.I.S. was the project name Paper Aircraft Released Into Space

Enjoy the radiation.
can't believe any of it really – i thought you needed some sort of massive thrust to leave our atmosphere???…….am i missing something here?!
