That was awesome! Gives me an idea: I've got a transformer out of an old neon sign (about 70,000 volts, I think) I'm going to try and do this with that, although I'm not sure how well it will work, being the resistance across the cd platter might be too high … if I catch the garage on fire, I'll post pics on theChive!

I tried to make a version of my own using a CD player motor and a neon sign transformer – not as impressive at all My 7500VAC transformer doesn't provide enough power to continue zapping the foil off the disk as the disk spins

lol cool, but that does more than erase a CD, that completely gets rid of the recording surface. Your erasing the CD and making it useless

Didn't that just burn off all of the foil from the CD? Isn't the data etched on the other side of the disk from the foil? From what I know the foil is only used to reflect the laser. So isn't the data still there unless the heat from the electricity burned that off as well?
