Coober Pedy is an Australian land down under, indeed (26 Photos)

The small Australian town of Coober Pedy (population about 2,000) is almost completely underground due to its severe desert climate. The locals live in caves excavated out of the rocky hillsides. Looks like a dream except for the everything.

  • Anjin-San

That place is also full of hotties..

    • .......

Yeah but she's trying to hit the orange instead of the white, dealbreaker.

    • Rusty Nail

      Probably an American Tourist.

  • Kcruz09

Reminds me of The Hills Have Eyes.

    • LukeSkywalker

Haha I see that too, but it reminded me of the homestead from Star Wars first.

    • geekerhead

Yup. totally reminiscent to the nuketown from "The Hills Have Eyes"…

  • gefundigeliebe

but WHY? If you absolutely positively have to live in a hole in the ground in order to survive the insane heat; move.

    • Dave

"The town is known as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there."

      • Buford_Justice

for having so many precious opals around they sure do have hideous 1970s furniture

    • ThatGuy

If people avoided any environment that forced them to adapt living habits we'd all be living in a fairly narrow band about the equator.

      • AnyoneForCoffee

The areas of the world that give us Malaria, TseTse flies plus a gazillion other animals that love the taste of Long Pig?

        Are y'sure?

        • Per

Yeah, in a world where humans never figured out how to hit 2 rocks together. There'd also be a total population of about 500k. According to some scientists or some such.

      • Tyler

ya speak for yourself. I'm with AnyoneForCoffee on this one.

    • Shes_jinxed

Money…if youre prepared to live out near any of the mines in Aus you will make heaps, even dish pigs can make 80k. I have mates who work six months on, then travel around the world for the next six months.

    • Ukulelemike

Because its a mining town-opals, I believe, so, work; people will do a lot for work.

  • faye

    #2 it says shaft

    • gefundigeliebe

      it also says 'holes', Beavis.

  • DRC36

Do you think it's hard for the people of Coober Pedy to stay up on current events?

I mean.. after all.. THEY'RE LIVING UNDER A ROCK!

    • drew

I see what you did there.

      • Tyler

Good since the ALL CAPS made it kinda obvious…

    • amrith777

Yeah–probably never even heard of "Geico"…..

    • Buford_Justice

I bet its a pain in the ass to hang pictures on the wall…

  • Paula_

What idiot would want to live there with no daylight and all…
    Wait… I do…

    – the one who forgot she lives in a cave already

    • amrith777

    • Spivias

      you should
and make sure you dont have internet there

  • Naomi

I live in Adelaide and when I was a kid there was a mentally handicapped boy in our class who would randomly shout out "COOBER PEDY!" in the middle of classes and school asembly. No one had any idea what he was on about. Years later I learned about this place. He must have just really liked it. Good old Marco.

    • Catbra

      Chive on fellow Adelaidian

      • Squid

    • hot carl

      Marco… Had a forehead like a drive-in movie theater…

  • Tankus

Do they get cable? That's all that matters!

    • walther

      incorrect question. correct one is;
Do they have internet? Chive is all that matters!

  • ThatGuy

Wait, where are the kangaroos? I thought you said this was Australia, Chive.

    • Catbra

All the kangaroos have been eaten by dropbears.
The front page of the newspapers always have a story about another tourist eaten by a dropbear. Most dangerous animal in the world!

      • McRo

As long as you cover yourself in Vegemite the dropbears won't touch you. Dropbears hate Vegemite. Unfortunately with Coober Pedy being such a remote town we weren't able to get enough Vegemite there in time to save the kangaroos.

        • Johnny Bloom

And don't forgot old Ivan keeping the tourist population down

  • Lower

The place is full of culture….Love the Aussie post, Thanks Chive.

  • xXbeermonkeyXx

    • snoobs89

is that the one with brendan frasier and he comes up from the bunker from the fifties?

    • bubblerider86

      that was my first thought!

  • Dingo8MyBaby

    • Noodle

Filmed in the same state so, yeah.

  • Joe Podplesky

epic town will be immune to the zombie apocolypse!

    • ingloriousbastard

Once the Zombies find the opening hole its all over ,no where to run !

  • reme

Wtf with the negative comments? How do you think the remnants of mankind will be living after a nuke holocaust? They're simply ahead of the curve…

    • April

I have lived in Alice Springs and my friends have been there and told me that they save a fortune on heating and cooling. They also say the maintenance is virtually nothing. No roofing or painting, insulation, or windows to replace. Their home was only 10K for a 3/2 bedroom.

  • snoobs89

    1. wait till everyone is asleep.
    2. remove all lightbulbs and shoes.
    3. scatter tacks all over the floor.

  • dave

    I've been there! I'm famous!!

  • oprah

I didn't see one fuckin barby mate

  • delta dawn

    fuck off creep

  • Adam

I have been there too, no one seems to mention that they actually mine opal there hence the reason people do live there.

    • TitoRigatoni

yeah, no one except for the 10 or so people who have already mentioned it.

  • Bud Ugly

Looks pretty cool. I'd probably get a little freaked out if I lived there full-time though.

  • Gwillickers

We went there on our High School trip from Melbourne.
    1. I purchased a can of coke from a vending machine was rusted.
    2. So so many drunken Aboriginals, not stereotype at all here, there were so so many walking the streets maggoted as hurling abuse at all of us for a week. Which was great. I also saw one open a tin of spam, put it under his armpit and run out of the shops and split it in half with his mate.
    3. Cave homes are mad as and definitely the best option now and after apocalypse
    4. We super glued a $2 coin on the ground at that was enjoyable for a few days also

    • Jen

      good story

      • CalculatedRisk

        Rich. And compelling.

        • Billy

You people slay me. Love the chivers.

  • SuperiorTo8

#4 Oh yeah baby! This is what you get when you cross the Millennium Falcon with the Delorean. We are an advanced people. Someday we will share our technology with the rest of the world

    • jay_w

      Delorean Falcon?… Millennium-orean?
doesnt look like it could get to 88, let alone make the jump to hyperspace.

  • AEON

this place is actually pretty famous… i used to work for a Travel/Tour company and most of the passengers/tourist would want to have this option added to their itinerary. most of them live underground because of heat… it was too hot to live up, so they built houses underground, where it was a lot cooler. Australia is actually one of the country i want to visit some day. So far, I've been to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and most of the west part of south america…

    • Chiefs420

I'll make sure I add that to the book I'm writing. Its called "NOBODY GIVES A FUCK – The Story of AEON"
