I was living on the 3rd floor, come to think of it I don't thing the 1st and 2nd floor residents were completely thrilled.

While it is true that the hover hand is not present, its distant cousin is in play – the closed palm. While not as extreme as the the hover hand, it still clearly exhibits one's discomfort with touching someone that is preceived as being clearly out of one's league.
