According to ArtificialOwl.com, this smallpox hospital was Opened in 1856, on the southern tip of Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island) was part of a multitude of public institutions to care for New York City's unfortunate and destitute.
The island sits between Queens and Manhattan, and was easily accessible by ferry; it was home to a prison, insane asylum, and other similar facilities. As of 1872, an annual number of 7,000 patients were treated, with an average of 450 deaths.
The island was renamed Welfare Island in 1921, and in the 1950s many of the institutions on the island became obsolete and were abandoned.

I’m looking forward to doing a CHIVE post in 20 years called “Abandoned Cancer hospital is a reminder of disease gone by”…

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentBuzz.com

Wasn't that in a Michael J Fox movie? the one where he wants to remodel it as a hotel?

  • Randa

That place is totally not haunted.

I for one look forward to seeing that cancer post in twenty years hopefully

Cancer will never be cured because there is to much money in treatment.

I'm pretty sure that this building was actually the insane asylum and not the smallpox building. I work right across the water from it and It's a fairly well-known object.

  • Niko Bellic

I've had shootouts wit the feds there.

Would've been better 5 years ago then the greatest woman I ever knew would be able to know her great niece or nephew.

I appreciate the sentiment. But in order for cancer to be cured, men can only comprise about 3% of the population you know.
Plus, 20 years is a long time for a site to live.

does anyone think of the hospital in gta 4

  • ParasiteMD

That hospital is actually the last residence for "Typhoid" Mary Mallon, who was incarcerated there until the end of her natural life.

    • Tim

Guess she should have washed her hands.

  • 125guest

I live on this Island! Not in the old hospital though thankfully!

  • TomorrowByStorm

This place is used in a series of books I read based in NY called the Mortal Instrument Series. Always wondered if it was real or not and then BOOM on the chive. Small world

This was Riverside Hospital. It moved from Blackwell Island to North Brother Island in the 1880s. North Brother is abandoned as well…look up that Island if you want to see some crazy stuff. It's where they kept Typhoid Mary.

  • GGG

We used to smoke joints and drink 40s here when I was a kid. We called it "the castle." Man I miss when Roosevelt Island didn't have any cops…

  • Mero

When I win the lottery I am going to buy that place

  • whatever5390
