It was art until he painted it. You don't see many painted statues in museums, just boudoirs.

Actually, Greek statues were originally painted very brightly, the color has just worn off of them.

I would have liked it if he gave it color through burning the wood with a blow torch or something to keep it natural; although, they are still impressive.

I think he did burn them. The only ones that look painted are the jet black parts and the white accents. could be wrong though

A nice nearly clear stain would have served them much better, for both protection and to bring out the color of the wood. To each his own.

My parents had a guy carve a Native American out of a dying tree stump growing up. It's pretty impressive to watch — the guy had about 8 chainsaws of various size running from massive down to little ones the size of your hand for the detail work. Quite the skill!
