This is why I don’t mountain bike in South Africa (Video)

Mountain biker Evan Van Der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa gets hit hard by a wild antelope (or buck, not sure) during a mountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam. He is clearly dazed momentarily but appears to make a relative recovery in time.

  • Do0zer

This genius saw this antelope coming for a while. What exactly goes through your head when deciding if a wild creature is going to stop so you can go in front of it? (other then it's hoof after it form tackles your ass.)

    • Nick

Give the guy a break. He was in the middle of a race. How could he have guessed in THREE SECONDS what the proper thing to do was…speed up? Slow down? Stop? 99 of us out of 100 would have done the same thing as he.

      • Do0zer

O of course a race! See it's all the antelope's fault! Didn't he know that he was in a race! Stupid him for not letting the biker go past him. End sarcasm.
p.s. I highly doubt that 99 of you wouldn't slow down after seeing a 300-500 lb animal running full speed at your direction. And If your "99 group" wouldn't then I feel sorry for the lack of intelligence in your 99. I mean seriously, what do you do when you see a huge deer on the road while driving, SPEED UP?!! LMAO!!!

        • Eric D

It is actually tough to judge. I mean obviously the animal wasn't expected to stop, but to be able to judge whether it's going to collide with you or not is a little bit difficult. I mean the likely hood that the antelope would cross in front or behind him was far greater than the likely hood of it hitting him. Also, speeding up saved my life once when a moose started to cross the road, if I hadn't sped up the moose would have ended up in front of my car and I likely wouldn't have survived. Split second decisions are tough to begin with, and when your exerting yourself physically like this guy, it is even more difficult. In summation, I would tend to agree with Nick that most people would wind up just like this guy in a similar situation. And if you think you would be able to avoid this same outcome, then I think you give yourself too much credit.

          • Do0zer

It's not that I'm giving myself too much credit, its that I'm giving the 300-500 lb spastic animal the right away to do what it needs to do before I go near it. But hey, I guess I have more common sense then the average man.
So he is in a race, so be it. Did his decision get him any further ahead? Didn't look like it to me. Thus as in anyone else who has the slightest bit of intelligence would do, slow down and wait to see what it does then move forward. Pretty simple concept that would keep your head on your shoulders.

            • orgazoid

Your grammar is atrocious. You're clearly not as intelligent as you think you are.

              • Do0zer

What a great insight to add to this discussion. Seriously? You took the time to even type that? We are on a free internet website debating on a video of a fellow getting plowed over by African wildlife and you are worried about grammar? This is a comment section, not everyone's thesis. Come back when you grow up and leave the debating to the adults.

    • @sterlingsylvir

Really, even this video sparks a debate on the internet?

    • Saffa

Dude, simple: Stop and let the thing have a still target or try and get away from it. Standard Operating Procedure when mountain biking in SA.

  • Rufio07

    Royally 'bucked' over.

  • Cake is a Lie

How did he not see him coming? He was clearly using his horn

    • Stan_Dalone

gotta hand it to ya cake, that was funny

    • @The_Scofield_

      Yep, good show.

  • yep

Ill go back to fifth grade. Damn it.

  • Token black guy

    Damn nature…you scary

  • Ken

Daaaaaaammmn! You got knocked the f*** out!

  • Stan_Dalone

damn lucky it wasn't a lion or Hyena

    • Nicnac

Well then they would have been "look out a lion" ~keeps riding~

      • Stan_Dalone

According to records hyenas run up to 30 mph lions 35 mph the bicyclist off road cannot do much more than 30 if he runs a smooth path but more likely 25mph so my point is he wouldn't be able to keep riding cause they would haul him down in a hurry

  • Jason Ciotti

    Like a…err an antelope!?

  • Lia

Ummm…did you mean to say something other than “or Buck”…since that’s a gender reference and not a species…right?

    • ssstoopid

That's the same thing I was wondering. And what exactly is a relative recovery? Did his brother/sister/mother/father/cousin/aunt/uncle/etc. get hit by one also?

      • Mirandom

Buck are a species here in africa. This one in particular is a Hartebees buck. The guy was on the radio this morning. He is fine, not a scratch on him.

  • The Gimp
  • Billy Dust

had his head down thats what happens

    • Eric D

Actually he didn't have his head down. He saw it coming well in advance. He even pointed it out. His problem was he didn't think it would hit him.

      • will

actually open ice hit bro fair game

  • Stewie

"This is why you wear a helmet." Really?!? That's why?

    • drewscriver

This is why you shouldn't ride a bike where a giant animal can knock your punk ass down, not why you should wear a helmet.

    • Adam

Yup. And I wear a swimsuit in the ocean so that a shark doesn't bite off my testicles.

    • ssstoopid

Should read, "This is why you drive a car."

    • riiiight

      glad someone said this.

you wear a helmet while biking to avoid getting kicked in the head by a charging, jumping antelope. of course. what other reason would there be?

      • Stephen Walsh

for the fucking wallabies thats why

  • Qwixel

That's how the Antelope distract the lions.
