: In 2008, 18 year old Dai Guohong lost his legs in the horrible Wenchuan earthquake. But rather than mentally check out he rose above his physical restraints to become one of China’s top swimmers.

: A local disabled sports coach encouraged Dai to join as a paralympics swimmer in Sichuan Province. Dai spent up to 6 hours in the swimming pool every day.

: After training for 2 months, he participated in the National Disabled Swimming Championships and placed third in 100 meters backstroke.

: Coach expects Dai to take part in the Paralympics 2012 that will be held in London.

: Dai Guohong uses prostheses in his everday life.

: He also likes to spend time with his girlfriend and father.

What's incredible about this is that until recently, disabled people had no status in China. They were considered a worthless drain on society. There's a big cultural shift going on now where they're beginning to embrace the idea of individuals having their own worth, even if they're disabled.
