Best Friends (4 Photos)

Lily was puppy when she was struck down by a condition that caused her eyelashes to grow into her eyeballs, damaging them beyond repair. At the time, she was living with seven-year-old Great Dane, Maddison. Maddison knew instantly that Lily was blind and took her under her wing.

Since then, the two have been inseparable:

‘Maddison is Lily’s guide dog. If they are out and about, for the majority of the time Maddison will lead and Lily will walk nearly touching her so she knows where to go. It’s lovely to watch. Maddison is always looking out for her. They curl up together to go to sleep as well.'

Sadly Lily and Maddison's owners were unable to look after the dogs and gave them to the Dogs Trust Re-Homing center in Shrewsbury, UK. The owner of the center wouldn't dare separate the best friends.

'The two Great Danes come as a package. There's no way they should ever be separated. I'm sure they will find a loving home soon.'

Please keep us updated. And if there is a donation site I would love to know it.

    • Mouchette

      I second that.

You could organize an office fun run to generate some money….make sure you load up on carbs before hand though

"Dogs Trust Re-Homing center in Shrewsbury, UK"
Dogs trust is a charity (that is well known in the uk) that have lots of centres around england, you can google "dogs trust" and it will come up.

oh and they are entirely run from donations i believe. (i only know because i donate to them)

It amazing but sad that an animal would do what most humans wouldn't.

    • Matt Hoyler

Most humans wouldn't…. but most Chivers would. Chive on brothers and sisters.

  • Såndre

Love this! I translated it to norwegian and blogged it. Thanks Chive!

keep me posted if I could get them to Canada I would love to have them I love danes set up a donate site set it up just set it up already 50 cents from all the chivers would go along way to help these two friends out call it an adoption prize all it whatever I have given money away to much lesser causes

    • Coldzilla

OK I have to ask – what exactly are you a "tech" of? The run on sentence? The "down with punctuation" movement?

  • 340Swinger

If I could get them state side, I'd take them. I have over an acre for them to run in, not to mention five other dogs that almost accept any dog into their "pack". The four oldest took our newest one under their wing last year and have helped him out greatly with his fears (we think he was beaten at his last home). If I was able to get them here, even after Maddison sadly passes eventually, Lily will still have five other dogs that can help her out. This is a fantastic story, I only hope all works out for them.

  • SuperDanMan4290

Just like a real family, if there are needs that someone has to take into precaution, then they should get all the help they can find. :-)

  • SpacemanSpiff_

Dog Trust are doing a great job. Their motto is to never put an healthy dog down.
I adopted a dog from them last year and she's great.
If you want to donate, I would suggest checking their website:

What a great heartwarming story! Thanks Chive………I haven't cried this much since Vin Diesel flipped the Charger in Fast and Furious!!

Please let us know if there is a way to donate to their well-being!!

  • drummer113

#4 I know Lily and Maddison will find a great owner(s) to take care of them both. If you were in their shoes, wouldn't you want a friend to help you out even just once?

Thanks for a great story on bad Monday, Chive. The start of my week just got a bit better.

  • lauren

this is the link for the news video,

and this is the link to donate to the dogs trust

I don't think you can give to the Shrewsbury centre directly, but I have read that they have had 16,000 applications to re-home the pair

    we need a Dog Day

  • Rocky Getters

Touching story. This is why I shudder whilst comparing any uncouth or insentient human to "just an animal." They seem to have more humanity than a lot of humans I know.

  • Mike

Cat Saturday never has stories like this! Cat Saturday…Really?????

    • Pookie

  • RMB

I agree a dog day would be awesome.

  • Chris

'caused her eyelashes to grow into her eyeballs'

Thank you Chive now there is one more thing I'm afraid of!

    • NicBree

It's a condition that you're born with.. If your eyelashes are where they're supposed to be now, they'll stay there. No worries.
