"The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights were named by the French scientist, Pierre Gassendi, in 1621. They were named Aurora for the goddess of the dawn whom the Romans called Aurora (known as Eos and usually described as rosy-fingered by the Greeks) and for the god of the north wind, which in Latin is Boreas. "
Just looked it up. It's not that the aurora is named after Australia, it's that they're both named after the Latin word australias. It means 'of the south.'
You learn something every day.
Any idea if is normal to happen so north in the south hemisphere??
I mean, if this happen in madagascar is the same as we say this happen in the south of Florida, talking about north hemisphere.
Madagascar and North Australia are both over 20' south and Florida is 30 ' north.

Thank you Chive, it was quick but the most amazing thing I’ve seen.
All I can think of is Final Fantasy 7….
that was the best one hands down
Way cool!
thats pretty intense
we live in such a cool place. we seriously need to stop destroying it
This a million times over. There's way too much awesome in the world to cut down or pave over. Nature rocks
pave the whales.
I'm guessing you don't go on TheBrigade that often then?
fyi this is due to the e.m. radiation from the sun bouncing off earth's magnetic field. if we destroyed the earth's atmosphere this would still occur.
More sad than that is that many people ignores it, i just hope we realise on time before its too late… wait a second… maybe is too late already
Any idea why we don't call the Northern Lights after a northern country/continent?
Because they cover more than just a country/continent? It's like calling the Pacific Ocean the American Ocean or some other stupid $***.
