The seventh black rhino population established by the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, was recently released after a 1500 kilometer (932 miles) trip across the country. Nineteen of the critically endangered animals were moved from the Eastern Cape to a new location in Limpopo province. The helicopter ride was just a portion of the trip, but it made for some amazing photos.

: The black rhino is sedated and sleeps through the journey.

: Black rhino being transported by helicopter to an awaiting land vehicle. The helicopter trip lasts less than 10 minutes and enables a darted rhino to be removed from difficult and dangerous terrain. The sleeping animals suffer no ill effect.

: Dr Jacques Flamand of WWF’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Project has just administered the antidote to wake up a black rhino.

: The rhino begins its new life and gives scientists new hope that the black rhino will not become extinct.

Thats the western black rhino, those are eastern (slight genetic difference) which means this project is even more important.

the article says the last time a western one was seen was 2006, so this is the "legally dead" announcement rather than anything really new.. Still a chance for the other subspecies

it's not all black rhinos though, just a sub-species native to West Africa. There are still some other sub-species in other parts of Africa. I saw a few last summer in Namibia, quite an amazing creature.

Fantastic story…. reminds me of the day the flew they Dinosaurs into the prehistoric park @ the Calgary Zoo. Was really hung over and looked out the window to see a TRex about 1000ft in the air.
