The seventh black rhino population established by the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, was recently released after a 1500 kilometer (932 miles) trip across the country. Nineteen of the critically endangered animals were moved from the Eastern Cape to a new location in Limpopo province. The helicopter ride was just a portion of the trip, but it made for some amazing photos.
-
The black rhino is sedated and sleeps through the journey.
-
Black rhino being transported by helicopter to an awaiting land vehicle. The helicopter trip lasts less than 10 minutes and enables a darted rhino to be removed from difficult and dangerous terrain. The sleeping animals suffer no ill effect.
-
Dr Jacques Flamand of WWF’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Project has just administered the antidote to wake up a black rhino.
-
The rhino begins its new life and gives scientists new hope that the black rhino will not become extinct.
