The seventh black rhino population established by the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, was recently released after a 1500 kilometer (932 miles) trip across the country. Nineteen of the critically endangered animals were moved from the Eastern Cape to a new location in Limpopo province. The helicopter ride was just a portion of the trip, but it made for some amazing photos.

: The black rhino is sedated and sleeps through the journey.

: Black rhino being transported by helicopter to an awaiting land vehicle. The helicopter trip lasts less than 10 minutes and enables a darted rhino to be removed from difficult and dangerous terrain. The sleeping animals suffer no ill effect.

: Dr Jacques Flamand of WWF’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Project has just administered the antidote to wake up a black rhino.

: The rhino begins its new life and gives scientists new hope that the black rhino will not become extinct.

Alot of reserves these days cut the horns off to try and stop the poaching.

Black Rhinos are not extinct… yet! There are fewer that 2500. 341 rhinos had been poached in 2011 (by 3 Nov 2011) in South Africa. If poaching is not stopped, all the conservation efforts of the past few years would have been wasted.
This spike is due to an increase in demand in Vietnam… where the Java Rhino is now extinct (announced in the week of 3 Nov 2011).

The Western Black Rhino is extinct now…the one that lived in Western Africa. This is in Southern Africa where the Southern Black Rhino, although threatened is going strong. Conservation efforts like these in South Africa show how more civilized it is than in West Africa. There the poaching scum have destroyed a magnificent sub-species and the people have let it happen.

I still feel to safe the rhinos in Africa they should take the horns off them so that they don't get poached … here in Africa it's bad with these poachers …. I wanne kill those damn a$$holes that is killing the rhinos but the goverment in SA is to corrupt to help out an organisation! They want to spend over 100 million $ for year end partys etc.

Its not about corruption, the South African National Defense Force are patrolling the National Parks. In some parks the horns are removed, however some poachers still shoot the Rhinos just out of spite or so they wont encounter the same animal again and "waste time". Some Reserves / Parks even drill the horns and insert tracking chips to try and catch the poachers once the animal has been killed and the horn stolen.
