There probably weren't entire farms of White Firs specifically bred to become christmas trees back then. They probably just told the groundskeeper to go out in the woods and find something suitable. More interesting is the frequent use of a miniature town model as the surrounds of the tree.

should how the trees look even matter? are we all so caught up with a perfect looking Christmas tree that we forget what really is important? And it gets worse every year, family comes together and every one is caught up with their gadgets. but damn those are some ugly ass trees.

Exactly, the tree was just there for the gathering, they didnt have a)money to buy a pwetty tree b)there were hardly any pwetty trees 3)they didnt care about the looks of it much.
Nowadays xmas is about the cosmetics, person a has to have a nicer tree and decoraton than person B, kids dont look forward to the xmas days they only look forward to the presents etc.

I'm an old fart too and I say kids have ALWAYS only looked forward to the presents – no matter how humble those presents may have been. If you don't believe me go read old stories or watch old movies. The one constant is people thinking that things used to be different. Kids have always been kids, and people have always been who they are. Uphill. Both ways. Humbug!
