I don't think that's fair. What would that child do if the experiment involved 50 separate people with different problems that needed help? Probably help the one he/she is most familiar with (family, geddit).

Kids are very intelligent, the problem is they learn bad attitudes and Ideas from the people around them or TV and schools dumb them down.

Its all about learning and social interaction. at that age they are learning constantly so any kind of interaction or response they can get be it positive or negative is something they enjoy, need and so on.

When they reach a certain age and the selfish gene really kicks in they may not help because at a certain age they understand about rewards and what is in it for them if they help. If there is a reward at the end of a task then you will get a response, if there isn't you will most likely get no response. For children the social interaction is the reward.

This stage is so fun! My one year old saw me wiping things down so he grabbed a wipe and started helping me. I took a video to prove he knows how to clean, for those teenage years when they try to refuse.
