On the surface the two shows have similarities, but I feel the need to address how wrong this is. Firstly, every sitcom focuses on the time when the characters are not at work unless work is the main setting of the story. Secondly, Robin and Ted are nothing like Ross and Rachel. Ross and Rachel had a constant will they/wont they relationship. We always know that Ted and Robin will not be together. After their breakup Ted and Robin do not really get together in any significant way again. Thirdly, since when was being an architect geeky? Fourthly, Barney and Joey are nothing alike aside from that they both pull a lot of women. Even the ways they do it are different. Lastly, the Marshall/Lily relationship is completely different than the Monica/Chandler relationship. I enjoy both shows, but aside from some really superficial ways they are not really that alike IMO.
There could be a Big Bang Theory column too, it's another perfect match.
Come to think of it, there are many shows that mirror these themes and patterns. We should group them all together and call it something. Like "genre".
