These are fireflies. These photos were taken in Japan during the rainy season (June to July), when the fireflies mate after the storm.
Tell me somebody used them as nightlights when they were kids? Not proud of it, but this was me all the way.

This photo was actually taken in Kansas in the Flint Hills. Jim Richardson took that photo along with other for National Geographic. Met him in 09 and have that photo on a postcard. The fireflies are in a field of wild alfalfa.
Wow! I'm glad there are some still in Kansas. It's been awhile since I have been back there but they were pretty well gone the last time I was.
I thought this was another exagerated fantasy…
until I went to southeast Asia…way off on an island,
walking through silent rice fields, sweltering hot, then…!!!!
it completely blew my mind!
Same for me in thailand doing a jungle trek on the night time sitting around eating we all seen, but only a few fireflys haha was soo magical tho )
I lived in Japan for a year and never saw it, I guess that’s what happens when you live in a city with 2.4 million people
I was driving back to Ontario from Florida and saw the ditches and adjacent fields like this for about 100 metres in July a few years back. I think i was in Pennysylvania. Was quite a site!
Raised as in the country of Alabama. That’s a we had to keep us entertained at night.
We used to smash them and write on the side walks with the glowy stuff.
funny how a swarm of fireflies or butterflies are cute and wonderful. But a swarm of plain old flies is a plague.
I used to see the occasional firefly when I was a kid. It's been many years since I've seen one. Now I know why. They all went to Japan!
I like cookies
Yes we caught them as kids….one of the small joys of childhood! Got to relive the fun teaching my kids to do it!
I used to catch as many as I could to try and make a spotlight out of a coffee can…
Grave of the Fireflies
Reblogged this on Perfected Pixel.
These seem like time lapse photos though. It should say that on the description.
In my area, fireflies used to light the summer nights. Now they have all but disappeared. This thread reminds me how much I miss them.
I used to watch and catch them as a kid in the midwest. They're pretty much gone not, thanks to the pesticides on farm crops. I truly miss them.
Meant "now" Can't type worth a darn.
#9…. that episode of spongebob…
#10 … Unfortunately, when we grow older, we tend to lose touch with that look of amazement.
