Austrian man attempts to break highest altitude skydive (12 Photos + Video)

Austria's Felix Baumgartner jumped out of a space capsule from an altitude of approximately 71,580 feet as the Red Bull Stratos project moved forward into the manned flight stage in New Mexico. The 42-year-old rode the space capsule attached to a giant helium balloon above the so-called "Armstrong Line." Soon, Baumgartner will attempt to break the previous record of 102,800 feet held by Joseph Kittinger in 1960.

    • guy

i got more excitement reading the headline rather than watching the pointless video. this is retarted… whats the point of the video if they dont show him sky diving? fail.

    • Ptesla

      Red Bull gives you Balls

  • etcrr

That is spectacular, I never realized how much goes into a project like this

    • Stan is gay

      fuck off..

    • brad

I could jump out of a big baloon too.

      • Chicken shit

You think you got what it takes then go for it

    • Evan

I wonder if it's all paid for by Red Bull, it seems like it would be quite expensive.

  • Bon_nie

Sweet, where do I sign up?!

    • Harry

Right here on my ass, after you kiss it

      • Bon_nie

        In that case I'll pass…..

  • whyme1973

My balls will never be that big. Kudos to you, sir.

  • DCChiver

And Leo was afraid to jump off of a little tower in Vegas – sheez – joking, my ass wouldn't have done it

    • Morgan Freeman

      I think that was John.

    This is terrifyingly awesome.

I'm surprised it's not sponsored by 21 Jump St – again.

    • Shill

Don't worry, Red Bull's got this.

  • bob

Those crazy Austrians…whacked of their tits on Jagerbombs most of the time!

  • Swamp1983

    Awesome

  • Gawker

How come there is no footage of the actual sky dive?

    • http://twitter.com/JHay97 @JHay97

because it's a test jump…. they wanna wait to show the actual jump from 120,000ft…..

      • Ken

Hell I would be impressed if they showed the 71,580 fall he did – and still be impressed (more) when they did the extra 50,000 – its still 71,575 feet more than I would do without shitting myself (and those I love)

    • nuccabay

its probably gonna be ringing in the new year in 2013…red bull keeps upping their game haha

  • sixdeadelves

i wanted to see more of the fall

  • Rbrown

    Who took this picture #11

    • None

Either someone jumped from lower altitude and joined him on the way down, or its a repost from another jump where they were testing the ability to jump and guide the parachute from within the suit.

    • mith

Those are from test jumps out of planes

    • gkaas

      Excellent, exactly what I thought…

#10 so when does this become a publicly available option

  • Hmmm....

Anyone else notice that old guys 6 inch chest hair?

    • Tom

That "old guy" is Joe Kittinger, the current record holder. He jumped from over 100,000 feet in 1960; I'm pretty sure doing something like that would cause excessive chest hair growth

#10 Buy this man a drink.

  • Mrs_Conejo

i was so excited the entire video and then when the pilot pulled himself through the hatch i thought i might cheer at my desk! freaking awesome! loved it!!

    so cool

  • T

I’ve done 15,000 feet, I can only imagine how 71,000 feet would be like!

  • Unfkngblvbl

    Space……….the falling frontier.

  • dgd

    big brass ones.

best part of this piece is that it made me aware of joseph kittinger, perhaps the biggest American badass of all time, he jumped at 30,000 feet higher than this guy did, and he did it over 50 years ago!! Oh and he also spent a year in a Vietnamese prison camp! Oh and he was knocked unconscious DURING a high altitude sky dive, experienced 22gforces, and still survived, NBD.

Am I the only one who didn't know about this guy??

    • f1junkie

      maybe

      • None

I definitely knew about him… Interesting fact was that he was up there testing pressure suits, and the glove on his one hand failed exposing it to the elements of near space…. He didn't cancel the mission or tell the flight surgeon for fear they'd make him jump early.

        Extra Credit:

He had the biggest balls of all time award, until Gugerin (or however its spelt) took it when he went into space on a rocket.

After that the balls of steel award was spilt three ways, to the crew of Apollo 8 who went to the moon with absolute faith in their single untested engine to get them home.

Then they were merged back into two sets, when Armstrong and Aldrin did their thing.

This redbull guy is brave, no doubts of that. But everything he's doing is extremely well tested and as safe as can be for what they're doing. I'd trade places with him in a heartbeat for a chance at that view.

    • The_Dood

I didn't but I went straight to wikipedia as well… The man's a fucking beast.

    • dazz

this guy is building up to jump from 120,000 feet which is about 18,000 feet higher than kittinger's record, though kittingers equipment was a bit more basic than the hi-tech stuff being used here

    • zyxxyz

You are. What kind of rock do you live under?

  • Kcruz09

wtf…didnt even show him flying like buzz lightyear.

If you are in the sport of skydiving you know about Kittinger. Another guy named Olav Zipser is trying to break his record as well. I have seen the training for a 30,000ft jump and can’t imagine the amount of training for this.

  • WoogyMonster

Prolly went home and had Red Bull and Jager to celebrate.

  • naa

    crazy SOB!!!!!!!!!
