Protesters should go prepared with helmets that have face shields and a face mask probably would not be a bad idea.
They should also bring riot shields and sports body armor as well if they can afford them.
Thus you eliminate the effectiveness of their "crowd control" methods, you eliminate serious injuries and the Cops dispensing beats become less of a hindrance and more of an irritation to the protestors.
Maybe even batons to fight back when they start the beatings…
