20 of the most expensive paintings in the world (20 Photos)

  • BabyFart Magizax

    #8 I'd never buy…. I love the chive!!!

    • http://spatiallight.net dmc

I went to art school, I even read a book on this guy. And I still don't 'get' what he was doing. But that's art for you. Some will like it, some won't. And if you're moderately known, your stuff will be ridiculously overpriced after you die.

      Chive on @ 100+ million.

      • thom

Most of these are full retard.
I can appreciate the age and rarity of something, and how that makes them valuable, but some of these are absolutely inexplicable.

      • 0331

I thought maybe I didn't get it because I am a Marine whose education leaned towards less peaceful activities.

      • nemesis

Did you get somewhere that actually has the full size Rothkos? They're freaking huge and create a very powerful experience because of it. I love his work. If you're ever in Houston, TX and feeling contemplative, head to the Rothko Chapel.

        • kornut11

I live in Houston, and I agree 100% with you nemesis. Until you see a Rothko in person, you won't get it…

        • SARmedic

I agree about the Rothkos. You really need to see them in person, here you see it a few inches by a few inches, in person they can be ten or twelve feet tall, much more to look at. They are quite impressive in person, but that's true about all paintings IMHO.

Some of those Pollock's are 20+ feet wide I believe, try hanging that in your house…

          • A BiPolar Guy

Some people will always think that because they love something, everyone who does not just needs to be educated until they do. They are sure that what they like is truely great, and the others just don't see it (yet). I say there is no law, authority, or rule in aesthetic choices.

Like, or like not. There is no why.

    • jeff donuts

the stupidity of ppl. this is art?

    • Skermitt

I wouldn't even take any of these pictures as a gift… you want to give me something I'd really like? Frame me up a KCCO poster and I'll have that over any of these.

  • BabyFart Magizax

    #7 love me some warhol

    • http://Xaotikdesigns.com Adam

      Over rated…

      • thom

Where is the beauty or originality of this?

        • Logically illogical

The Death series wasn't meant to be "beautiful" and as far as originality goes, Warhol gave zero fucks.

          • its_forge

On the nosey, it wasn't about any of that. This particular era of his wasn't my cuppa but denying Warhol was an artist is um…. nuts, I guess?

            • DeepestBlue

Warhol's only gift was his ability to sell snake oil to ignorant fools who weren't smart enough to tell him he wasn't producing any art at all. Not to mention most of his so called work was actually done by other people at his direction. The very mention of his name makes me want to vomit.

              • its_forge

And yet all that doesn't make what he created any less "art." That's just the way things are dude.

  • Unfkngblvbl

    #3 I'd pay $5 for that.

    • kirah

thats more than i would lol 🙂

      • fignewton

I wouldn't wipe my ass with that. people are FUCKING retarded

      • Bender

Hehehe u just lost five dollars

    • Papa Mikey

I've got one of those! Oh wait, I just confused it with the construction paper cutouts my kids made… My mistake

    • bobo

You don't get it man!!! It's all about the arrangement of the colors, DON'T YOU SEE IT?!!!

      • Billy

    • Candy

with $5 you could make your own.

  • Dirty_Dingus

I'd rather have a Chive calendar on my wall….Geesh.

    • Sundevil8181

Exactly…those paintings get that many millions is disgusting…that money could be put to so many hundreds of betters uses.

  • organix85

    #20 $140 million… not a bad return…

    • whosyopapi

I'd be happy with ten grand…

    • Francois

What a stupid thing to attribute value to. I have seen painter's drop cloths more interesting than this.

    • One Ear

Did he give any to his 5yr old son who spilled the paint?

    • http://www.thechive.com AdamBaldick

This was in the Mark Walberg movie Contraband

    • https://www.facebook.com/RANDJA57 Randy Brown

my grand kids are better and they have some recognizable meaning, most of these are proof that those with money don't always have brains, or sense

      • Adam

I am just impressed at the various sorts of ppl the Chive attracts! I fucking love this site! And I love all my fellow chivers!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/JoiCoolAndTheFunkmachine Johan Blomqvist

I think he was just about to start painting and had an epileptic seizure or something….

      • Katy

    • Dirty_Dingus

I wonder how many of these artists ever got to cash in….I'm no art history major, but I'd guess that most of them weren't all that wealthy or they died penniless.

    • Luke

I guess it would be impossible to counterfeit… or maybe impossible to catch a counterfeit….

    • Biggus Diccus

This made me think of a funny story I heard from a drama student that went to Oklahoma. Ed Harris who played Pollock in a movie went to Oklahoma as well. Apparently he gave a bunch of other actors crabs because they all used to share costumes while doing this play.

    • nemesis

The people who pay the big bucks for these aren't doing it because they love the art, they're doing it because it's a solid investment. The hype surrounding the work will carry the growth in value of these paintings right through the times when stock markets, auto industries, mineral prices, tech fads are all bouncing around and destroying wealth on the whims of some greedy traders.

      • John

Problem is… you gotta have somebody willing to buy it or trade it for it to be of any value to you if you lose everything. To me… that's a huge gamble. (But then again, I don't have $140 million to fool around with, so I can't vouch for what millionaires or billionaires would consider "a huge gamble".)

    • its_forge

I wonder how much Pollock got for it; most of the time they buy these pieces from the artist for $5000, $20,000, and then sit on them for 5 years and sell them for $10 million to some other rich asshole.

  • chappy

    i just don't get it

    • A.Einstein

Don't feel bad. Most people don't get Pollock, or abstract art in general.

      • alb565s

What IS there to get? Some of those paintings are creative and beautiful, but I agree with the other chivers– it mostly looks like someone spilled paint and smeared it around a little bit. And heck, #3 looks like something my 2yr old made with construction paper!

        • jamboy215

Maybe a 2 year old could make this, but the point is he didn't, nor did anyone else. Art comes in waves, its a style at a point in time, its fights and differs from what is the norm at that point in time…also these paintings are huge, it's hard to convey the size on a computer screen.

          • Lia

Jamboy, are you an art major? I was just about to make the same comment. Classing up the Chive.

            • jamboy215

No but I took a few art classes back in college and do some painting in my spare time. Just a lifetime student of Art and Music in general.

          • http://facebook.com/daaneskjold Chazz_B

still the most expensive one, i can't understand it, it is just chaotic

            • Kzo

The prices are not about art, they are about rich people playing with art. (and seriously most of them don't know shit about art, but they act like they do)

              • its_forge

This. Like how they put $9 wine in a $300 bottle and gave it to a wine "expert" and they couldn't tell.

        • derpa

It's all about the popularity of the artists, the time frame at which it was painted, the impact it had during its time, etc etc….still way over priced but it's more than just squares.

    • matty

Don't be amgry necause you didn't come up with the idea first

  • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

    #6 Christopher Walken…meet Picasso

    • HUH?

      a ginger, that explains a lot………

      • its_forge

Paranoid schizophrenic and there weren't any meds to be had for at least another 100 years, *that* explains most of it.

    • DEl

      That's Van Gogh genius

      • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

ah…you almost got me to give a fuck….good effort though. Nice attempt

        • DEl

Don't be mad at me because of your own ignorance. If you don't know what the fuck you're commenting about, maybe you should keep your incredibly stupid thoughts to yourself.

        • DEl

By the way, if you truly didn't "give a fuck", you wouldn't have responded to my reply.

          • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

HAHAHAHA….it's almost as if you didn't hear me, which is odd because you reply a lot. Keep it up. You may just get somewhere with this. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

            • Ned_Plimpton

I think you guys should fight.

              • cardinaldave

                you spelled kiss wrong

              • DEl

I have better things to do then fight an ugly old ass loser, who is completely in cultured to the point of not knowing the difference between Van Gogh, and Picasso

                • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

You mean besides using sarcasm to point out flaws in others. I've got better things to do too…like your mom. 🙂

                  <img src="http://i2.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/007/508/watch-out-we-got-a-badass-over-here-meme.png" height=200 width=300>

                • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

In cultured? Comma between Van Gogh and Picasso? Is that proper English? Are you really going to try to make a point about how knowledgable you are in foreign art (with poor use of sarcasm) while using improper grammar and English? In your words….GENIUS. I also notice that you are habitual in name calling. If you're gonna call names, how about some GOOD ONES!!!!???? Ugly old ass loser is really the best you got? Genius (intended sarcasm) is what you started with. Am I supposed to be offended? Maybe goat fucking is more up your alley. Maybe you should get laid at least once this year. Maybe you should get back to work and leave the commentaries to those who speak English correctly. By the way, GENIUS, the forementioned PICASSO remark was intended as it was a very abstract perception of Christopher Walken I was referring to. If I were referring to a self portrait of Van Gough then I would have referenced him instead. Go kick rocks in Florida.

                  • https://www.facebook.com/DannoRules Danno Maurer

OOPS! I gave a fuck. DAMMIT DEI…YOU GOT ME!!!!!

      Looks more like Simon Pegg

  • Dude Imbibes

#20 I make a Jackson Pollock anytime I eat Indian food.

    • winfields

That gave me a pretty good chuckle…. love that name too – The Dude rocks!

      • Dude Imbibes

Thank you! Yeah great movie and Bridges is awesome.

      Chocolate Rain

    • its_forge

I'd love to see this one in person, it's gotta be mind-boggling.

  • john

The fact that these crappy paintings sold for so much make me legitimately mad

    #3 #5 #8 #11 #20

    • LucretiusCarus

You have to get up close to some of them to appreciate them. #5 and #20 in particular are interesting for their panterly aspect which you can't see in a 2-D photograph.

I'd take a Mondrian over #3 any day.

      • john

i think that you, sir, are full of crap. they would look at childs paintings at any distance

        • LucretiusCarus

No reason to be butthurt because you don't know what painterly is or who Mondrian is. Why don't you actually go SEE one of them before you talk smack about how much they suck?

          • john

No painting could validate a $140 million price tag

      • LucretiusCarus

        Painterly, it should read.

      • saltygary

Always been more of a Van Doesburg kind of guy.

Things are only worth what people will pay for them… I guess there are people that will pay millions for the same thing a first grader could reproduce.

    • A.Einstein

If you can do better, do it.

    • jeff donuts

seriously. any fucking retard could of painted these. stupid ass people pay for the name

      • Fucking Retard

        *could have painted…

        • megze

          lol @ could of

    • Black6dog

Why is everyone bitching about #5, $63.50 is pretty cheap, I'd buy it

      • Colin

        Well played sir. Well played.

    • mickey

KCCO grab some finger paints and make your own

    • rockets

      You're an idiot

    • ryan

i actually think #5 and #11 are pretty cool, but the others are just random and I don't see how it takes, well, talent to pain, especially #20! but that's why i'm a musician and not a painter

  • jred

why? By the way, what is the Mona Lisa worth?

    • ChiTownChiver

More than all of these combined… i would assume. No reason it isnt on this unless Bob just forgot. How do you forget the Mona Lisa though

      • HUH?

the country of France owns the mona lisa, not for sale and hasnt been sold lately. so its worth whatever someone would pay for it.

        • miles.v

Has not been sold lately is quite un undestatement since it's the propriety of France since François Ier bought it around 1515 directly from Léonardo Da Vinci

          • Ian

Supposedly a private collector offered the French state 250 million euros for it – and was turned down flat.

          • fabio

            French stole it. You idiot.

    • Chris

In order to directly attribute a value to it, then it'd have to be sold. The Mona Lisa will never change hands for money, so you'd have to just guess. But, it'd be a lot more than these paintings if nothing more than the cache of owning it…

    • Gash Hound

All art is worth as much as the idiot is willling to spend

    • peter venkman

the amount of its worth is technically "priceless". it is also the single most expensive item ever stolen.

    • Del

Can't believe how ignorant most of you are. The Mona Lisa will never be sold, it sits in the Louvre and always will. Educate yourselves before commenting.

      • peter venkman

he never asked if it would ever be sold, he asked what it was worth. Read the comment before being a jerk.

        • jred

you're a good man Peter…I have your back if the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man every rears his ugly face around these parts again!

          • Jack o' lantern

Hey now, let's keep the gay level down over here.

      • Dirty_Dingus

At least until the zombie apocalypse.

      • Dr. Fap

@ Del Be a big boy and put on your beret and eat your croissant, Merci beaucoup.

      • Nate

Until France defaults or has another Revolution, lol…

    • artie

It was assessed in 1963 at 100 million……. that's around 750 million today……. still doesn't change the fact that it's just a bunch of paint on some canvas

      • dwide schrude

The Mona Lisa is insured for $1billion, so that's probably the most accurate estimate…

heard that on Discovery channel i believe

  • BigPup

Art is pretty amazing. maybe after pinky the brain and I take over the world I'll be able to afford some of this for my $89 million dollar island… KCCO!

  • WxWatcher

#20 Where's the talent in something like this?

    • thom

Where is the beaty or originality?

    • Yessirr

      No art-apreesh in college, eh?

    • gallowaycreations

The talent is in getting someone to pay $140 million for it.

    • Event Horizon

There isn't any talent in Pollock's work, but I don't believe there is supposed to be. I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly find the painting beautiful, and that requires some sort of vision. It's not just a bunch of lines splashed on a canvas at random; there's an intention behind it. More importantly, Pollock was the first person to attempt this. Just because a first-grader could supposedly replicate it doesn't mean that any first-graders took high quality acrylic and flicked it onto wall sized canvases prior to the 40's. There's also a reason why Pollock's other paintings are rather absent from this list. This is one of my favorites to be sure. But for 140 million I'd rather have a Picasso or a Velasquez.

    • ICUP

In my art history class we watched a video of Pollock doing one of his paintings back in the 50's or60's I believe. Whether you choose to believe it or not, he is actually using one of the hardest art techniques to produce this, as well as many of his other paintings. Art is one of those things that is strange. What you may like, others may hate and vice versa. There are tons of people that would pay that amount to have in their possession an original Jackson Pollock or Van Gogh etc.

  • Ray

How can any of these be considered "art"? I could give a 3 yr old kid some crayons and get the same damn result.

    • Dave

Your kid can draw #9? Sit down and shut up 'Ray'

      • Ray

If she wanted to, I'm almost certain she could 'Dave'. Yes she is a creative child with a vivid imagination. As they say…"opinions are like assholes…everybody has one".

        • http://twitter.com/McBeastie666 @McBeastie666

difference is you talk through yours.

        • Jack o' lantern

But in your case you ARE one

          • http://twitter.com/McBeastie666 @McBeastie666

thanks but I had this one covered already.

    • Jesse

Then do it. Somehow I don't think it'll work out for you.

    • Yessirr

That's a very ignorant position on art. Ever heard the saying, "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."? Maybe just don't talk about art if that's all you can come up with.

  • m&m

Not sure where the art is in #20 it looks like someone ate some paint and had the shits… Well Kcco

  • http://Xaotikdesigns.com Adam

#20 I give up. Nothing I will ever do will ever be worth even a fraction of this painting, even though I did more than just splatter paint diarrhea style on a canvas.

What sane person thinks that this piece of garbage is worth that amount? Did they just need to spend the money for some kind of tax write off? Was it some kind of joke? Did they lose a bet?

    • swing 4 the fences

agreed its total garbage- probably some fuckwad hipster bought it

    • HUH?

i think its to prove to their friends how much extra cash they have laying around.

      • Anderson

I agree its nonsense (thats kinda the point though) but what seeing on yer monitor doesnt convey is the size. its 8ft by 4ft and bloody overwhelming to look at in the flesh.

        • WTF

hey… who u been talking too?

      • 0331

If I had that kind of extra cash, I would have a garage like Jay Leno.

        • ICUP

You consider cars your art, someone considers Pollock's painting their art. No need to pass judgement.

    • http://www.thechive.com AdamBaldick

This was essentially the beginning of extreme abstract art. nevertheless its stupid

    • drugfiend

niggas like you get bodied and are th real garbage real talk check urself before you wreck your self and get your ass beat

  • HoustonChiver

wouldnt exactly call some of it art…but hey, if they are making that much off angrily throwing paint on a canvas…maybe i should try it. lol

  • Francois

Not worth it. I would buy the Renoir for $5000 at most

    • Jack o' lantern

Then you'd better start working double shifts at Mickey D's

  • whosyopapi

    #20 This is art?

    • http://www.thechive.com AdamBaldick

This art was also in the movie with Mark Walberg, Contraband

      • whosyopapi

        Great movie

    • AnyoneForCoffee

If you see the original, it does actually have the illusion of three dimensional depth.

Whether it's worth so much money is another matter. Mind you, should a two bed apartment in London or New York really cost hundreds of thousands?

  • janedoe

#9 Don't mind me, just chucking babies.

    • jred

I didn't know Rugby Scrums used to involve babies…huh, learn something new everyday.

    • HUH?

this is one of the few that actually looks like it took some real talent.

      • guy

and it was painted 400 years ago.

      best comment yet….

Um Ok Expensive Paintings. Where are Things That Bounce

      BRING IT BACK!!!

  • 80's Baby

    #9 ART… #8… not ART

    • http://twitter.com/McBeastie666 @McBeastie666

as much as you may want it to be true, you have no say in determining what is and isn't art.

      • Ray

Ok, then who does have the say? You? Some stuck up rich twat?

        • http://twitter.com/McBeastie666 @McBeastie666

point was, s/he and s/he alone does not get to definitively say what is and isn't art. It's not a definitive subject matter. chill people.

      • 80's Baby

True… but I still can have an opinion. Whether or not I state it as fact, it is still my opinion. Go troll elsewhere "MC such-and-such"

        • http://twitter.com/McBeastie666 @McBeastie666

yes..and the opposing view point must equal trolling. by the way, I love the sentence "whether or not I state is as FACT, it is still my OPINION"….awesome. I've got to remember that one.

          • OrgazoidHD

    • Vent187

I could agree more. You are 100% correct. And anyone that calls themselves an artist and doesn't agree, can go F themselves.

      • Dylan

      • Kzo

Yeah fuck those people who can actually draw, paint, and can understand (even if they don't necessarily like it) that this has its place in art history…
Fucking artists who are maybe working on the next blockbuster you're gonna watch or the next videogame you're gonna play 😉

    • iFart

  • Winston

#20 makes me think of 80s nost……….. Wall Street and a hot Ms Hannah…….. When bud fox is kitting out his loft and the montage of them making sushi and doing interior decorating……… HA.

  • Dan

#10 #15 #18 Renoir and Klimt were both great. Some of these others, not so much.

  • Ned Ryerson

Proof that rich people are just as stupid as the rest of us. Actually I take that back. They're complete morons.

    • MAGSGQ

I'd rather frame my 11 year olds drawings of stickmen

      • Anderson

good to see your not bias

        • Bob

A few of them are masterpieces but the price is what gets me, art is about quality not money

        • MAGSGQ

          I'm not.
