More than anything else, Matt wanted to run in his school’s Field Day race last week. Unfortunately, Matt has spastic cerebral palsy, a difficult disorder that makes moving, especially running, very hard for him. But Matt decided to run anyway, and what happened next is unbearably beautiful.

Work with cerebral palsy patients all the time…its a disorder that really tries to put a limit on who you are inside..Matt didn't let it. Way to go!!!! EPIC WIN!!!!

The 3-minute mark got me crying–the whole class behind him, cheering him on. When I was that age, most of the kids in my school probably would have been laughing at him, making jokes, etc. I love how kids are so supportive of others. Great post, keep 'em coming.

Downvote me all you like but you ALL know this is true:

The same group-think mentality that it took for those kids to gather around Matt is the same exact brain functioning that will cause them to bully or traumatize other kids later on. The fact that this kid has a considerably significant disability causes them to think they're being noble by cheering him on. Take someone with a less obvious disability or difference and those same kids will shun him because there isn't an opportunity to look like they're good people by backing him. It's only when someone is completely fucked beyond repair that they rally behind him, and it's so they can feel like they did something noble. It's pandering and it's bullshit.

When they think about it later, they'll get goosebumps. But it won't be because they are thinking about what a great moment it was for Matt, they'll be thinking of how noble they were to do such a selfless thing and how everyone must've looked upon them that day as good people. They'll frame it in their minds as a great thing that THEY did, not him.

Fuck you people, you absolutely know this is true, but you're offended because you've had these same feelings before, or even done something like this before and are now realizing the goosebumps you got on your arms when you think back on it was because you were celebrating yourself instead of the person who deserved it.

Every thumbs down I get is by a person who doesn't want to face that truth.

It doesn't impress me one bit. What Matt did impresses me.
