Los Angeles real estate prices are fubar (24 photos)

: It’s no secret that housing prices in southern California are notoriously, insanely high. Attribute it to the weather, the scenery, the fruits and nuts. The following gallery shows a house for sale in Venice, CA where I currently call home, and another house for sale in Fort Wayne, IN where I was proudly born and raised. Both properties have similar sale prices around $1.4 million. I’d like to propose a new design for the California state flag with a picture of a person wearing clown shoes bent over and grabbing their ankles.

There's a similarly appointed house as the one in Fort Wayne in Shepherdsville, Ky for just around $500,000. Still too ostentatious for my tastes though.

That really doesn't surprise me, not in Southern California. My parents sold the house I grew up in for just around $160K over twenty years ago. Last time it was sold, it went for over $700K and I wouldn't doubt that it will hit $1 million within a few years. By comparison, my sister and her husband bought a house in Florida 3 years ago–a much bigger house with far more land than our childhood home–for $125K.

What's really sick about California, though, isn't the house prices. It's the fact that you will often find multi-million dollar homes within a few blocks of homelessness and poverty. It's disgusting.

I just moved to LA, from Houston, about a month ago – the house for 1.3m is actually in good shape compared to other priced about the same. Real-estate is ridicules here and WAY over priced!!! You're lucky if the Kitchen is remodeled and maybe the bathroom. Garages are a bonus and land is unheard of. But hey, the weather is nice! PFFT!

I have family (well former family after the divorce) that live in the Santa Clara area of California. Their homes in about 1000-1100 Sqft and the spent over $900K on it. The home its self was only insured for $150K. The high cost is due to the cost of land. I have a 1700SQft home in North Carolina and it cost me on $120K with a 1/2 acre of land.

I will never live anywhere in that state. Over pupulation has raised the cost of everything.

I agree. I lived in a house in NE Indiana with almost an acre of land with over 2 dozen mature pine trees, a 3 bedroom 2 bath with a full finished basement, a 500 sf shed/out building with power, 2,000 sf driveway. 5 years ago it went for $124,000.00.

Making a $100K a year in Cali is like making $35K a year here in North Carolina.

The only reason the California price is 1.3 is the value of the land itself. Homes that close to the beach (Venice) will have much higher land prices than a comparable house in another part of LA county. The house itself is probably a tear-down.

It's amazing people actually will pay that much for that piece of crap house. Making money isnt easy, and its surprising people will spend their hard earned money on such a dump. (Dump compared to places you should be able to buy with that kind of money)

I'm glad I live in the Midwest. It is better than living in the cesspool of crime, liberal politics and stupidity that is Cali. The weather isn't worth the difference in price. If I want nice weather, I'm a plane ride away to a state other than Cali. Been there many times and won't be going back.

…because you don't understand that they aren't really selling the house…they are selling the land underneath it. Whoever buys the property is going to demolish this house and build something substantially better on the lot.

Midwest Jobs don't pay well (typically), but the housing is pretty affordable. $200 – $400K puts you in the nice suburbs in a spacious beautiful home, safe neighborhood, decent schools. $500 + puts you in the BEST neighborhoods with the BEST schools, incredible mini-mansion type homes, $1Mill+ your looking at either a flat out mansion, or mini-mansion in gated community, or waterfront property estate

The Midwest is a fantastic place to live! That is why I moved to Joplin , MO from SoCal. I can afford to live in a badass house And travel as much as I want to.
