The day I lose my sanity completely I will go off the grid and live in a tree-house just like these ones. And it will be GREAT.

No bugs if you seal it up good like a regular home. The trees going up through the middle can have boards going around them and sealed as well. Need to think about future tree growth as well though.

Serious question. For the ones that have the tree through the floor and/or roof, does the the tree slowly crack the floor and/or roof as it grows wider over time?

There is a gap around the tree. Sometimes there is a flexible membrane that extends from the structure to the tree for weather proofing.
