Dutch photographer travels across Russia spending the night in stranger’s homes (27 Photos)

Dutch photographer Bieke Depoorter hopped on the Trans-Siberian railway with an idea. She would stop only at the small stations in remote towns, walk up to a random home and hand them a note that read, “I look for a place to spend one night at, I have no money for a hotel and I want to know how Russians live”.

Bieke took photos of her journey to attempt to tell the story of how an average Russians live their lives...

Average people living near poverty welcome a complete stranger with a camera into their house to share their meager belongings and to have what looks like a lot of fun (and vodka) and most of the commenters here just say "glad to be an American" or something equally condescending. Hey, try knocking on a random door anywhere here and asking the homeowner if you can spend the night and take pictures and see if you make it to door number 2 without getting shot in the face.

      @McBeatie, I couldn't have said it better.

She's doing it in the US now also. Basically she finds the most disgusting / underprivileged people possible, I mean really really disgusting and underprivileged people mooches off of them for a few days, takes photographs, then tries to get famous for taking photos of unfortunate people who have no clue they are being exploited. She sells her photos in books and goes on talk shows in NL.

-Source: I met her while she was being escorted around by poor people in the US.

    • freddy boy

@AGuyWhoKnows, thanks for the insight but, bro, it doesn't change the pitiful status of poor people. A pox on her if she's the exploiter but long overdue blessings on the poor.

Reminds me of what it looked like growing up in the '70s….if we never remodeled and let everything go to shit.
Oh well, "The things you own… end up owning you."

#3 #8 #10 #27 Not too many concerns about 1st world problems here. "I thought I had it hard because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet"……so said my grandmother.

Very depressing.. I totally understand now, send them more vodka!

    • Roman

No, no, that's not how it works. They send us Vodka.

  • Retired Navy

No doubt we have places and families like that here in the US.
Moon shine instead of vodka, crack instead of food,,,,,,
Think of when you drive through some small towns and large cities.
The run-down urban areas and the crack problems. The rural towns with the meth,,,
One doesn't need to travel far to see how this country has fallen on it's face.

Stranger in my house, taking photographs of my kids in their underwear or in bed..?…. I don't think so. She'd be shown either the door pretty damn fast! Female or not, it's just creepy to let a stranger do that.

  • Big D

I think I've seen all of that wallpaper in Russian porn,.

  • Horta

She's actually Belgian.. And she did the same thing in the US, the year afterwards.

  • Shlomy Steinberg

I am so glad my mother's family left there!

  • Ur_dumb

My wife, who its Russian, is offended by the description as "average"… the Trans-Siberian railway takes you through SIBERIA. This is not average – these photos show extreme poverty… far from average. Nice way to help keep up bad stereotypes…. morons.

    • LolSauce

you bro, no one fucking cares

      • szymon

yeah, nobody cares, nobody knows shit, but let's have an offensive, wrog opinon, why not? Why so many americans are so ignorant?

      • Ur_dumb

clearly you care enough to reply…. thanks for caring. 😉

        • Ur_dumb

my comment was meant for LolSauce, btw…

    • ImpressMe

Maybe you should direct your anger and childish name calling at the photographer who put this description out there. Seems she is the one propagating the negative stereotypes of the Russian people…and making a tidy living off it in the process. You could help more by actually providing some facts and an alternative viewpoint……instead of resorting to the name calling right off the bat.
