    #4 i knew he lived there :D

    • gmen

well he is Marvin the Martian…it'd be pretty lame if he lived anywhere else

    • crazydog

it obstructs my view of uranus….

    • Frank

With a name like Marvin the Martian, I'm pretty sure everyone knew.

  • Pdiddy

USA USA USA!!! We rule, sorry everyone else…

    • Guz

Didn't you crash the last one?

      • Schrodinger's cat

The crash was a government coverup after accidentally finding life on Mars… Decepticons!

    • Drunkendave

      Funded by china.

      • passwordistaco

Oh shit, it's funny because it's true.

      • CaptainInsano

True but if they built it ….. ?

        • passwordistaco

Who said built? China hasn't built anything in 50 years they didn't steal from the U.S. – "Funded" because we spend their money.

          • CaptainInsano

I didn't but what I did do was imply that if China did build it there's no way that thing goes to Mars…

      • smiles at you

        doesn't matter,our scientists

        • vandinz

Nope, scientists from all over the world. The main spokesman on the day it landed wasn't American. Nice try though.

          • vandinz

The head of the project is Argentinian. Just checked.

        • turbosmurf

3/4 of the technology is European , the Rover was built in England , the stage 1 rockets are Russian, many of the electronics are German, etc.

        • dumb americans.

          typical unknowing retarded american.

    • hubris before a fall

    • Puffy

      Yea! Fuck Canada, eh!

      • JPL

the mass spectrometer, used to determine the elemental composition of the soil sample it takes, which represent the bulwark is the whole point of the mission, attached to the rover is Canadian made. So…fuck who…eh?

        • JPL

i am thumbing myself down…for not proof reading before posting…

          • Dustin

Wash your hands after thumbing yourself.

    • John

I have to thumb this down. I'm a proud American, but this really was an international effort.
All scientific equipment on board was developed in conjunction with universities and space agencies all over the world, with the exception of the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN), which was funded an supplied by the Russians.

These are the other major scientific instruments on board which were developed with international cooperation.

      ChemCam- USA, France
Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) – Spain, Finland
Alpha Particle X ray Spectrometer (APXS) – Canada, USA
Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD)- USA, Canada, Germany
Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) – Russia
Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) – France, USA

Additionally, the team of engineers and scientists who spent years at JPL working to build the rover and make this moment happen is composed of professionals from around the world.

Claiming this as a sole triumph of the USA does injustice to the effort put forth by the international community and, more importantly, human kind in general.

Unachievable if the Americans didn’t have to come in and stop Hitler from taking over the world

        • 98409

yeah. because the Russians(as well as several others) had no part to play in that, amirite?

          • John

I think this can be summed up into a "standing on the shoulders of giants" kind of thing

    • Ball

2.6 Billion dollars. A guy named Fuk Li, and they cant spend 100$ on a colour camera at the beginning?

      • John

They were running on an 8kbps data link for the first two days, and the high resolution images come secondary to the engineering and scientific data that tells if the rover is alive or not

  • jim thorton

Landing shit on Mars is awesome!

    • BOOM!

    • ermagerd sperce

Also, Russia, Spain, Canada and a couple private companies helped build the rover so props to them too. So awesome!

  • tomchalm

#16 so that's where they get their ingredients from, no wonder they charge so much.

    • mike

      Obama left that there!

    • Rich

That would explain the taste as well.

Further proof that we won't find intelligent life there.

      • Billy

She works at the store under the Chive offices would be my guess.

    • GernBlansten

      Your eyes, they are brown.

    • not Daniel Tosh

if you were Daniel Tosh, you sure as shit wouldn't post anonymous and without a picture.

      • Alpha0010

Because if he had a picture that would be definitive proof, since pictures of celebrities are so hard to come by on the internet, right?

      • Gregatron

Really??? "for morbid"?? That's not even a sentence…… Unless there was a person named "morbid"…. I can see how it sounds similar but…. I mean…OK….. Anyway, and I'm doing this as a favor to you, the line is "Nuke the SITE FROM ORBIT. It's the only way to be sure"….. So, yeah….

        • Guest

You'll have to forgive Brian – he's a product of the American let's protect egos and pass them to the next grade public school system.

Oh, and also mind-altering chemicals in the bloodstream. Lots and lots of those.

          • 98409

            agreed. Americans get butthurt easily.

        • Pants Pudding

Morbid's a good guy, he would never want to nuke Mars.

    • Lame quotes

Yeah….but she aint going back, and she wouldnt do them any good if she did…….

  • HumpDan

Did anyone watch it live and see the chubby guy start crying when it landed?

    • phoenixv8

After dedicating countless years of my life on something that had an extremely small margin of error, high probability of failure and the infamous "7 minutes of terror" radio silence whilst waiting for confirmation that everything that has lead up to this moment is not just a crater inside a crater…..I'd be pretty emotional upon its success too!

      • arTee

        … and a little chubby ;)

  • mrkc

America, thinking it was all us involved. software to land the rover developed by the brits, software to track, the brits. Chute tech… yep developed by the brits.

    • passwordistaco

I need some links to believe this. We must've used a completely different chute than previously, new software to track, and wow ALL the software to land the rover (the greatest accomplishment)? I guess all we did was give the Brits rover a ride huh? Why did you guys decide to launch during the Olympics? We probably should get that American flag off of there too, sorry about that.

    • Lunch_Box

Number of fucks America gives about mrkc or his/her comment = 0

    • Dan

I'm sure America paid for it. You broke ass countries didn't put in on this!!! Brits might have wrote some code for it but we checked and dbl checked it then paid you for it. Get your own space program.

      • john

The code is the clever bit moron.

        • Phucka PhaceBuuk

the code was written by american/indian joint programmers. Brits are too stupid for this.

      • black27696

        Apparently youtube is leaking.

    • weaksauce

Thanks god we flew it for them then, because last time we let them fly their own rover (beagle 2) it just crashed it's way to mars.

      • Guest

    • chuck flufner

4 out of 5 dentists recommend…not being british!

      • John

Percentage of americans not seeing a dentist (because they have no health care) is far higher than in the UK. So per capita you have the bad teeth. Also per capita we have the highest medal count in the olympics. Not bad for a small country…

        • Jawbone

You're measuring dental health by dental visits? Massage those numbers any way you can, candy-corn teeth! I reckon KCCO actually applies rarely when different nationalities are being bitchy to each other on the fucking Internet.

        • Phucka PhaceBuuk

Brits teeth are worse than africans.. Only because they have to deep fry everything.. and Africans have no dental plan at all. Weird.

        • Eric

All your athletes train in the US. Just something to think about

          • videologic

oh ffs, who cares? we are all just people… does it really matter who made what part of the mars rover? Its a triumph of mankind. I bet people from far more countries have participated in making it.

The british teeth thing is getting old though. British people just let people on TV for reasons other than them having perfect teeth, whereas american TV they only let people on with 'perfect' unnaturally white teeth. I would bet in america, teeth on on average less healthy, but people will have had them whitened. I would bet also that in america, far more people have cosmetic surgery for the same reasons.

      • P90

Brits officially have the healthiest teeth on the planet but hey if were going by stereotypes why don't you get off the computer and go give you poor fat sister-wife some attention.

      • Ron

I'm an American, but it's a verifiable fact that they have healthier teeth than us. Get over it.

  • Daith_Lee

I'm a bit confused about the hype of all of this. Didn't we do this twice before already? Not being a troll, I just really don't get what was significant about this landing?

    • drew

The equipment was a hell of a lot larger (and heavier) than the past 2 initiatives, and therefore required a much more complicated landing procedure. Also, people really need some good news…

      • Daith_Lee

Got it…Thank you. Both sentences make sense to me.

        • trl87

It's also not solar powered. It has a radioisotope thermoelectric generator which means it can operate day and night.

    • CaptainInsano

Right? I'm more excited to watch Christmas Vacation every winter.

    • Rich

Last time we did this, we wrapped a small rover in airbags and dropped it. This time, a much larger rover was slowed by parachute, then rockets were used to bring it to a hover, at which point it was winched by cable to a gentle landing on the surface.

      • black27696

After which the sky crane flew off so it wouldn't interrupt the rover.

    • Kevin Mills

I think much of the excitement is due to the fact that several meme creators had no idea we already had 2 rovers up there.

If rover has the camera, who took this pic? #5

    • Joshua D. Loomis

No clue if you're serious or not, but this is an artist's rendering of it. I saw the picture (minus the text of course) with a caption saying such at CNN.

      • Underbaker

Might have been an ounce of seriousness there, but mostly wanted to post a picture of Marvin. Really good artist though, that sand looks real. I thought it might have been a picture taken on earth before the mission.

    • Underbaker
    • Flynn

The other, secret, rover they sent to do the real searching after the last rover discovered evidence of life. Curiosity is the decoy.

    • Frank

Even the rover can take mirror pics. AMAZING.

  • Ethix_

#2 I feel like the actual Curiosity would have better spelling

    • Spelling 101

What word in "holy fucking shit I am on mars" is spelled wrong?

      • Spelling 102

None of them. "Curoisity" is just so excited about landing that it can't spell its own name.
