This photo-realistic art was drawn by 29 year old artist Samuel Silva using ball-point pens. He based it on this photograph from a Russian photographer, and it's honestly hard to tell the difference between the two. Check out Silva's other work on his Deviant-Art, it's stunning.

That's really cool that he can do that. Amazing, in fact. But what's the point of drawing/painting things to look exactly like the photo they're copied from and change absolutely nothing about the image? It would kinda make me sad to have that kind of talent only to use it to be the worlds slowest photo-copier. This would have been an incredibly useful and profitable talent 200 years ago before the invention of the camera.

It's about spatial intelligence. The more you practice things like art, it transfers into other things in life and being able to understand, and interpret surroundings spatially (or take something that is two dimensions and make it three). Those abilities are only gained through practice, and people will only hire those who can show their abilities. Things like this are good for portfolios and such to build reputation for later work.

Not particularly. They demonstrate reasonable technical skill, but little ability to interpret. It is possible for a human artist to overcome the limitations imposed by photography. But Samuel is young at 28, give him time.
