Hundreds of gunmen were protecting these islands from rival cartels and government troops. One of these islands belonged to Pablo Escobar himself. But nowadays, with the largest Colombian drug cartels gone and Pablo Escobar dead, these islands are the property of the state. The legacy of Escobar lives on in Medellin, in a different and slightly unusual manner. The man and his life are now sold as a tourist attraction to visitors which has proven to be quite popular.
