All the college scenes were filmed at Columbia University in New York, including the fictional Weaver Hall office/lab interiors. Ivan Reitman decided to use an actual on-campus office instead of a soundstage. Columbia University agreed to all this, on the condition the school not be mentioned by name on-camera.

In Dan Aykroyd's original rough draft of the movie, the story was going to take place in the future with the Ghostbusters fighting ghosts with magic wands. The version would cost "at least $300 million in 1984 dollars" according to Ivan Reitman. Ivan suggested to make the Ghostbusters more like blue collar firefighters.

Though never referred to in the script, the green ghost the guys bust in the hotel was dubbed "Onionhead" by the crew, because of its horrid smell. Dan Ackroyd called it 'John Belushi's ghost'. The writers for the animated show would later name the green spud: Slimer.

    Bill. Fucking. Murray.

  • Unfkngblvbl

#17 I was really hoping it was actually marshmallow cream.

    • Smarmy B

      That's what she said.

  • Iggy Catalpa

You mean "Ray Parker Jr. had trouble writing the famous Ghostbusters theme song until he heard "I Want A New Drug" by Huey Lewis and the News."

    • Tillman61

Thought the same thing. The lyrics were a bitch, but the tune was easy as pie since it had already been written.

    • Simon

I was thinking about this the other day – I don't think they're all that similar really. There's certainly more similarities between songs out there that have never been legally challenged.

I understand that I Want A New Drug was used as a placeholder until Parker Jr's song was available, but Huey Lewis must have made a fortune off the back of this on a song that would have largely been forgotten about by now.

  • MOAR

#3 From IMDB: "Candy turned down Wayne Szlaniski in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) and Louis Tully in Ghostbusters (1984) because he felt his good friend Rick Moranis was better suited for the parts." John Candy was the man.

    • Clowd

I'm trying to picture Candy as Seymour in Little Shop Of Horrors.

    • biggles

Damn rights, john candy was a good man.

  • T-gas

    Classic

  • Duke

Great post. Doesn't always need to be minded, problems,or DAR to be good. Thanks for the useless Trivia knowledge.

One of the greatest films of all time. Whenever friends come to visit NYC I take them on a "Ghostbusters Tour" of the locations in the film. They love it.

u're right, black forest cake is quite delicious.

  • techno_viking

#18 My exact expression when seeing current Macaulay Culkin pictures.

  • Sargent Hulka

I always thought Ray Parker Jr ripped this off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYqlOfzDsK8&fe…
"Soul Finger" by the Bar-Kays, this is closer than I Want A New Drug.

  • Sarge Hulka

    • dan

which is kind of funny, because this song was in spies like us, also with dan aykroyd.

  • http://alabamagb.com David

Oh man, as a Ghosthead I loves me some trivia! (Granted, most of this I already knew, but it's still fun to hear it all again.)

#17 is even better when you hear the full details. When they were explaining the scene to Mr. Atherton it was originally going to be 70 lbs. When he heard this, he asked that he see a stuntman do it first. They said "It's just shaving cream…" but he insisted that on the logical basis that 70 lbs. was still 70 FREAKIN' LBS.! So they did test it on the stuntman, and he we thoroughly crushed. After seeing this, Atherton asked that the weight be lowered, but despite 20 less lbs., he was still put flat on his ass. Awesome guy.

    KCCO!

-David "Rookie" Railey of the Alabama Ghostbusters

  • crazydog

#4 you misspelled a complete sentence that included the band huey lewis and the news….

    • George Zip

Was hoping someone else would catch this as well.
