Some shuttle buses take tourists from Beijing to the closest section of the WALL that's in good enough shape.
Most of the tourists will go up for 2 hours to the highest point in that section, then walk back down to catch the shuttle bus back to town.
I didn't know all of this until I asked my chinese friends about how crowded our day was during dinner. Also, if you the chance to go see the wall…beg your friends NOT TO TAKE YOU THERE ON SATURDAY

Why would that be an amazing feat of archtecture? It is a really big wall. They didn't have to account for atmospheric pressure or geometrically line anything up with the sun at noon of the summer solstice. They just had a lot of people work a lot. Impressive, yes, architecturally impressive, no.

the wall was built to keep the invading mongolians out, who actually didn't have the technology to build ships, it wasn't until the mongolian conqeust that they learned how to build ships!

If it were that easy, why would you walk the entire wall to the sea? Why not just get some rope or a ladder? I think, though not sure, that they had sentinals on the wall to watch for that.
