    Thank you for your service.

It's sad that after taking care of a cat or a dog, and after the animal get attached, because they trust and they love the person who saved them, they have to let them go….cruel cruel world!

    • maura

what exactly do they mean by let them go?

      • Nate

We had to release them out of our bases. Usually we would give the dog or cat to a local family that we had met and trusted.

      • 1234

        In some instances, shoot them.

What is it about Labradors that make them so popular as military working dogs?

      the nose knows

Primarily their nose, but they are also affable, intelligent, observant, vigilant, eager to learn, eager to please, physically sturdy and able to endure extreme conditions. Labs were trained to be resilient and reliable hunting dogs, which make them ideal for this kind of duty, as well as service dogs (i.e. guide dogs).

All dogs were bread for a purpose, most typically hunting or working. I always say, "Dogs want jobs." Purebreds especially have an inherent desire to serve a purpose and often times act out in negative ways (e.g. chewing the couch to pieces) when they don't have an outlet for that impulse.

I can't help but think that the soldiers and Marines who get to work with these animals on a daily basis are also the ones who most able to cope with their environment and the things that they see on a daily basis, as well as their re-integration back into The World. The dogs they work with serve two purposes, 1) they fulfill mission objectives, and 2) they provide comfort and unconditional love to their handlers, therapy if you will.

*bred – I do not think I would eat dog bread.

    Those are some brave dogs!

  • Laurie

Awesome post guys, thanks for sharing!!

  • Nate

I appreciate the kind words everyone! I wanted to show that Marines aren't cruel to animals, well not most of them. To clarify, we only had to get rid of adopted animals because of the risk of rabies. It was a great experience working with the grunts of 1/5 and I hope they get a chance to find their pictures here.

Most of the photos are mine, but a few are from other photographers on my team or from the grunts themselves. We had IED detecting dogs with us and adopted other animals as pets along the way, at least until we were told to let them go.”

Thank you all for your service to our country and the people who have been oppressed and denied basic human rights in the Middle East. I do have one question. Why the kitten?

  • Tim

War is bullshit. Sucks that you guys are put into harms way by super-rich psychopathic people playing out their sick power hungry fantasies. They never send their sons and daughters to fight.

This is not an anti-soldier sentiment, it's an anti-war, anti super-rich war pigs sentiment.
