Often they do this because they've been de-clawed and the texture of the litter bothers they're paws, try a softer litter.

Oh there is a reason. And it's usually because the box is not clean or you don't have enough boxes. My cats let me know when the box needs changing when I see them start to eye my comforter like it's looking more of an attractive place to take a dump than in their gross litter box…sigh. Keep a clean box and try different kinds of litter. Then it will get better!

My girlfriend used to practically fumigate the litter box with air freshener almost as soon as my cat would poop in it. (And it's a self cleaning box.) It scared the cat so much she stopped using the litter box, and started going under our bed. Now I have to keep two litter boxes, because my cat will still pee in the self cleaning box, but will only poop in the other one.

And now she's my EX-girlfriend.
