How many people's reaction, if they believe in ghosts or not, is to defend themselves by going on the offensive? That's why it's a little girl with a doll and not an axe wielding masked man. Makes sense to punch the kid cause you KNOW it's just a kid. In the elevator, you'd be crying like a little girl (I know I would!)
