A cave so big it has its own jungle (18 HQ Photos)

In some of the most difficult terrain in Vietnam is Son Doong cave. Only recently discovered, Son Doong is the largest cave in the world (sorry Deer Cave in Malaysia).

Re: Lead image above: The cave actually collapsed in this portion, bringing down the entire forest into the cave.

Sơn Đoòng Cave was found by a local man named Hồ-Khanh in 1991. The local jungle men were afraid of the cave for the whistling sound it makes from the underground river. It was not until 2009 that it became public after a group of British scientists from the British Cave Research Association, led by Howard and Deb Limbert, conducted a survey in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng from April 10 through April 14, 2009.

As with many periodicals, Nat Geo is obsessed with blank statements such as "World's Biggest " .. without defining what they mean .. there are longer caves, there are deeper caves .. but it makes for a catchy lead line. And sloppy journalism.
