Here at theCHIVE, we’ve always put user experience above all else and we’re proud to announce myChive. It’s very basic and simply gives Chivers the option to login without using a 3rd party service and choose a username and profile pic (although you Facebookers can still use Facebook to login).
You’ll notice our commenting system has changed from Intense Debate to Disqus. Disqus has all the cool features Intense Debate has except it allows for native myChive sign on, whereas Intense Debate does not and this is the main reason for the change.
On that note, please bear with us right now as we are tweaking the settings and functionality of Disqus and it takes some time to get right because we had to migrate over 3 million comments to Disqus and this caused a few hiccups. Basically, what you see now is not the final product. We’re ironing out the kinks now, eliminating some of the extra space between comments, and we appreciate your patience in the meantime.
Here are some features of myChive:
To register you can easily connect with Facebook or choose a unique username and password using your email by clicking “Sign up” instead.
On the registrations page you can choose a handle and upload a profile pic that will be displayed when you comment. You will also choose a password here and have the option to connect your myChive profile to Facebook. Please note, once you choose a username, you cannot change it.
Once registered you can manage your settings such as email, change handle, profile pics and password here.
One of our favorite new features is our NEW daily and weekly newsletters we are launching right now as well. You can manage your notifications preferences in the Subscriptions tab.
When commenting you can continue to comment anonymously as a guest, WITHOUT logging in. Or you can choose to comment via myChive.
You’ll notice we changed to default sort order of the commenting from chronological (first-to-last) to what’s Popular Now. The reason for this is to reward users’ comments that may be newer and much more clever to rise to the top rather than defaulting to some mash-loading user who got to stamp “FIRST!” on the comments. This is also done to give users worldwide a fair shot at their comments making the top of the list.
Secret: What most people don’t know is that when we hit the PUBLISH button on theCHIVE the posts don’t instantaneously appear to everyone at the exact same time, there is up to a 1 minute lag depending on where you are located in the country or world. This evens the playing field.
Also, we know there are no downvotes at this time. We love hammering a downvote on somebody as much as the next guy, but Disqus’ platform doesn’t allow for it at this time. We will bring the downvotes back! But it might take a couple months. Luckily, the good comments are being pushed to the top now which will ensure trolls don’t thrive here.
While today’s release of myChive may look basic it is setting the foundation for some really cool stuff to come:
– Cross platform login so you can make a comment online, on our mobile site or on our mobile apps and it will show up across the board.
– Cross website login. We will be combining logins for theCHIVE family of websites. For example, when you are logged into theCHIVE, you’ll be logged into theBRIGADE, ChiveCharities, TheChivery and KCCOBrewery. This will allow users to manage their settings, notification settings, order history and donation history all from one central location
– The option to save your favorite galleries and videos on theCHIVE
-Follow other Chivers
– Chive Chat: If you are Following another Chiver and they are following you back, you can direct message them internally
-Rewards system: Get rewarded for uploading photos, commenting and ordering shirts with points to be used as discounts in The Chivery.
Much more to come! And again, thank you for your patience in working out the kinks!
