A few months ago we switched to ‘New Disqus’ from ‘Old Disqus’. It was a big move for us. There were a myriad of advantages: It set the table for our unified commenting platform which has been a huge success. You could also drag and drop ANY photo you wanted into the photos. It will soon have the capability of allowing you to direct message other Chivers. There was one big disadvantage: You could no longer hashtag the photos from the gallery to make them appear in your comments.
Sometimes progress means two steps forward and one step back. At the time of the transition, I also promised the Chivers we would bring back the functionality that allowed you to hashtag a photos.
That classic functionality is back today for desktop! iPhone and Android in a week or two. You can also hashtag multiple photos.
Unlike our peers in the space, theCHIVE is an accidental social network. We were just trying to create a photoblog that became a massive social network and most of the time we really have no idea what we’re doing. I think it’s part of the charm of the site.
I do know that one of the draws of theCHIVE, on a social level, is that it has an unabated commenting system – you don’t have to sign in to comment. For our peers, this would be an unmitigated disaster both social and financially. – They operate on exclusivity and information gathering. But for Chivers, this system works just fine. We’re not always gonna’ get it right but I’m happy with the current system and I’m excited that we can bring this crowd favorite back!
