Very recently (June 8th, 2014) a dear friend of ours and an avid Chiver, Craig Leibelt, was celebrating his 28th Birthday with his girlfriend (Monica) in Cabo San Lucas. During a swim in the breakers he was stung by a jellyfish, went into cardiac arrest, and was unconscious. His family raced from Myrtle Point, Oregon to be by his side. Craig was put on a ventilator in the ICU at OneWorld Hospital By Saint Luke’s, however, the family soon realized the nightmare that was their reality; hospital bills began to pile up and the Medical staff demanded that a bill of over $ 50,000 be paid before they would release Craig from the hospital!
From help of family friends Steve and Nichole Cooper (siblings that grew up with Craig) as well as their parents, they quickly took action and spread the word through social media. Quickly a donation site was created (by Steve) and a helicopter was getting ready to pick Craig up from Mexico to San Diego. But this was just the beginning, as the family began to unpeel the layers of a hospital that was known for corruption and extortion of American citizens in the past. It is now day 3 and Craig has safely arrived in San Diego after battling Mexican regulation. At this moment, he is still unconscious but has showed some signs of progress. He is still in critical condition however, and still has a long road to recovery. At this point, we are trying to raise as much money for the family as possible.
