After missing out on the gold medal in 1988’s South Korean Olympics, an embarrassed USA Basketball team asked the NBA to supply players to the Olympic roster, which they did.
The 1992 squad included an aged Larry Bird and Magic Johnson serving as captains as well as MJ, Sir Charles, David Robinson, John, Stockton, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, and Christian Laettner.
Old-school Chuck Daly, who had found success with the Pistons, coached the Dream Team.
They’d scrimmaged before, but Daly had always called it as a tie to keep the tensions low. However, after an unconvincing win against the French team, Daly decided to pull out the stops and let the team beat each other up a bit.
The teams were Magic, Barkley, Robinson, Mullin, and Laettner against Jordan, Malone, Ewing, Pippen, and Bird. The media was locked out and the gym was empty, and Daly gave them one command: “All you got now.”
Magic’s team took an early lead, but just like the guard was changing in the NBA, Jordan started to go hard at Magic one-on-one, while proclaiming that Magic’s time was over and his was just beginning.
Jordan’s team stormed back and won the scrimmage 40-36. MJ called it was the most fun he’s ever had on a basketball court.
Luckily, one of Chuck Daly’s assistants recorded the practice, and the video surfaced recently, so the world isn’t completely deprived of this session. Check it out HERE.
